Rutgers Law School is seeking a staff attorney for the Criminal and Youth Justice Clinic's Adolescent Representation Project. The Project provides legal representation to incarcerated youth in New Jersey and engages in strategic litigation and system change advocacy on behalf of its clients.

Rutgers Law School seeks to hire a full-time Managing Staff Attorney for the New Jersey Innocence Project at Rutgers University. The attorney will provide legal representation and informal advocacy to those seeking exoneration for wrongful conviction. The attorney also will oversee the project's case screening and investigation processes, collaborate with pro bono partners, work with an already-established Advisory Board, and, in collaboration with the director, seek sources of external funding. Finally, the attorney will participate in statewide justice reform initiatives and community education efforts. The Managing Attorney may be resident at either the Newark or Camden location of the Law School, depending on the preference of the successful candidate.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Juris Doctor degree;
  • License to practice law in any state, with a preference for New Jersey Bar admission;
  • Client interviewing, counseling, and litigation experience, with a preference for experience in youth or adult defense advocacy;
  • Experience conducting research projects that involve quantitative
    methodologies or statistics or other experience demonstrating strong analytical skills;
  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral communications skills
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into easily digestible formats;
  • Ability to work independently, manage several projects simultaneously, and meet
    deadlines;
  • Ability to seek out and receptiveness to supervision;
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse staff, stakeholders and community groups;
  • Commitment to the highest ethical standards
Certifications/Licenses
Familiarity with New Jersey courts, state and local agencies, and governmental structure preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Experience in litigation of New Jersey Open Public Records Act preferred;
* Holding a license to practice law in the State of NJ preferred;
* Familiarity with New Jersey courts, state and local agencies, and governmental structure preferred;
* Prior experience in obtaining information from government agencies preferred; and
* Web page design and maintenance experience welcome but not necessary
Equipment Utilized
The Candidate must be proficient in the Microsoft suite of programs (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and familiar with legal case management systems such as CLIO.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Typical physical demands for an office environment. The Candidate must be Willingness to travel to and visit clients in prisons statewide.
Owning or having access to a car strongly preferred.
