Position Summary:
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology seeks applications for adjunct instructors to teach introductory courses in engineering ethics. Among the issues explored are normative ethics, the ethical responsibilities of engineers, codes of conduct, the validation of knowledge and expert claims, the politics of engineered systems, the role of technological determinism vs technological autonomy, and the ethical dimensions of technological innovation.
Essential Functions:
Under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences the adjunct instructors will teach one or two courses per semester.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
Candidates should have a Ph.D. or other advanced academic degree in philosophy, applied ethics, science and technology studies, engineering, industrial design or a closely related field.
Applications are welcome from candidates with expertise in engineering practice including legal and public affairs, regulatory compliance, health and safety, and other relevant areas of business and engineering practice that require ensuring high levels of professional responsibility.
Key criteria for selection will include experience teaching university-level courses in engineering ethics (or applied ethics) or evidence of comparable activities in a professional setting.
Applicants should be prepared to teach on a face-to-face basis.
At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
