Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Dean in the Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM), the Academic Advisor performs all of the responsibilities of an academic advisor as well as liaising with other School advisors and other functions at NJIT. The Academic Advisor is also responsible for regular communication of essential information to MTSM students, faculty, and advisors.

Essential Functions:

  • Advise students (both on-campus and virtual campus students as well as students studying at a satellite location(s)) on curriculum requirements and develop completion milestones to ensure timely graduation; track their academic success and develop strategies for achieving these milestones; including regular email communication with students for reminders of deadlines, advising, curriculum changes, etc.

  • Perform various administrative tasks related to enrollment, including graduation/degree certification, registration approvals, etc.

  • Coordinate first-year, transfer, and graduate student orientations for MTSM.

  • Assist with transfer agreements with Community colleges, or any new academic programs.

  • Prepare documentation and attend open houses and recruitment events.

  • Prepare content for program flyers, and brochures, and regularly update them.

  • Review course schedules and assist the Associate Dean with the planning of course offerings.

  • Implement best practices for first-year students concerning academics, career and major exploration, networking and professional development, and social and communication skills.

  • Participate in the MTSM’s recruitment efforts through outreach to prospective students.

  • Work with the Registrar's Office on evaluation of student’s prior learning, including transfer of credits from previous educational institutions.

  • Monitors, maintains and updates the university’s web-based planning tool (“DegreeWorks”) to help students and advisors monitor progress toward degree completion.

  • Assist in reviewing reports & documents for AACSB.

  • Identify and inform Associate Dean of appropriate content and resources for dissemination to first year students. Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; work collaboratively with other academic units and services in the college and throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.

  • Represent the MTSM advising team and serve as the first point of contact in interaction with the college and departmental administrations.

  • Serve as liaison on behalf of Martin Tuchman School of Management Academic Advisement with the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies.

  • Work with the Office of the Registrar to constantly strive to improve the registration process for students.

Additional Functions:

  • Serve on committees and panels (i.e., serve on the university’s First Year On-Boarding Committee, etc.).

  • Assist in learning assessment activities and various aspects of the accreditation process.

  • Assist with the development of student recruitment material as well as assist with student retention and graduation efforts.

  • Participate in recruitment activities at high schools, county/community colleges, and NJIT.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to establish a strong rapport with students and be an effective part of a collaborative student-oriented team.

  • Strong service orientation characteristic.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Banner information systems. An understanding of business curricula and basic familiarity with course content.
