Overview

The Global Government Affairs group within the General Counsel’s Organization seeks a Vice President, U.S. Regulatory Relations (USRR). As the principal intermediary between the company and the supervisory personnel of its federal banking regulators, the USRR team plays a critical strategic role driving a cohesive approach to supervision, including by identifying focus areas of the regulators across engagements and preparing senior executives and the boards of both American Express (AXP) and American Express National Bank (AENB) for their interactions with agency personnel. USRR partners closely with the Regulatory Exam Lifecycle Management (RELM) team within Global Risk and Compliance to deliver on this promise.

Given intensifying regulatory demands as the company grows and calibrates to heightened supervisory expectations, the USRR team is expanding to include a new VP responsible for continuous monitoring activities across multiple risk pillars. The successful candidate will work closely with, and directly support, senior leaders from multiple business units and functions that regulators view as critical to the safety and soundness of the company and AENB. The new VP will collaborate closely with colleagues across USRR and RELM to connect dots and cascade insights across supervisory interactions. Ultimately, the new VP will play an important role in support of the company’s culture of risk management. Special projects, including process optimization initiatives, will provide additional growth and leadership opportunities.

Key Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain strong working relationships with the supervisory personnel of multiple federal regulatory agencies (i.e., Federal Reserve Bank, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau), operating with a sense of service to this critical set of external stakeholders.

  • Prepare senior leaders for their interactions with regulators and generally advise management how best to approach interactions with agency personnel.

  • Connect dots across supervisory interactions and drive internal awareness of focus areas and potential sensitivities to minimize regulatory risk and ensure the company is meeting or exceeding supervisory expectations.

  • Drive effective and sustained collaboration across USRR and RELM to ensure USRR maintains a cohesive view across the supervisory landscape.

  • Communicate complex issues clearly and simply (through both written and verbal channels) to company leadership, agency personnel, and a range of internal stakeholders.

  • Flourish in a fast-paced and high stakes environment in which the company is held accountable for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of information provided to its regulators.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • 7 years of relevant experience, preferably in support of regulatory oversight at a large U.S. bank.

  • Excellent ability to communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly, in both written and oral format, and to calibrate communications effectively for senior leaders and regulators.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, executive presence, and ability to operate effectively at all levels of the organization and with agency personnel.

  • Broad understanding of the remit and lifecycle of regulatory supervision, including the processes and standards employed by the relevant agencies.

  • Experience interacting with supervisory teams of federal banking regulators, responding to their inquiries, or remediating their findings.

  • Experience preparing business representatives to present to an important external audience.

  • Experience developing presentations and/or briefing materials for senior leaders.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities against tight deadlines.

  • Strong leadership skills, including ability to lead teams and to drive coordination and results in a cross-functional organizational environment.

  • Self-motivated with a high level of personal energy and commitment, operating with a sense of urgency as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree required; relevant advanced degree preferred.
