The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Program Director, Sports Management, the Senior Associate Director, Career Services (Sports Management) will drive overall career education programming, student and alumni career advising, and career administration for the MS Sports Management program. This individual will guide students and alumni as they cultivate their professional interests and goals. The services provided will include career counseling, career programming, and creating and directing the logistics of workshops, panels, events, information sessions, and networking opportunities. As a member of the Columbia University Sports Management (CUSM) team, the incumbent will provide students with individual advising sessions, insight, and advice for career placement and advancement in this increasingly complex field. The Senior Associate Director will support business development efforts by engaging with recruiters and external constituents about the MS student population, playing a key role in sourcing new employer relationships in partnership with the program's director. The incumbent will market the program to the industry, and facilitate and evaluate career development. The incumbent will ensure that students have a multitude of resources available to them and the opportunity to explore career options and develop career decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

Advising - Student Support

  • Provide career advice to students enrolled in the rapidly growing program in both group and individual coaching sessions.
  • Evaluate student abilities, skills, and interests and work with the Career Design Lab (CDL) to administer assessment inventories, mock interviews, and job search techniques.
  • Advise students on companies to intern/work for; facilitate networking opportunities with program alums within students' areas of interest.
  • Provide guidance and seek training on counseling issues where appropriate.

Industry Relationship Building

  • Create external business development strategy for the MS student population to source and cultivate program-specific employer relationships; create the strategic vision and approach to effectively leverage faculty, alumni, and existing industry relationships; craft creative outreach initiatives and maintain contact databases.
  • Independently work to cultivate relationships with program alumni to source potential panelists for industry sector and function area educational sessions for current students, while leveraging engagement for business development referrals to employers for internship or full-time opportunities.
  • Build and maintain industry relationships with leagues, teams, venues, agencies, networks, media outlets, start-ups, etc. to create pathways for internship and career opportunities.
  • Leverage personal network and program connections to create networking opportunities.
  • Develop initiatives focused on industry-specific career outreach in the sports industry.

Career-Related Events and Workshops

  • Independently direct career education and advising resources for the MS student population.
  • Partner with Career Design Lab (CDL) colleagues to provide individual and group advising and career workshops for MS students as warranted; prepare presentation/program materials, including PowerPoint slides and other collateral while adapting content and formats to improve engagement and impact; lead student participation in various programs and overall MS resource utilization and employment statistics.
  • Oversee comprehensive online MS Careers course curriculum on Canvas in collaboration with CUSM team members, from the pre-matriculation rollout of foundational career education modules to developing and refining content throughout the year.
  • Develop and implement career-related program events including Employer Information Sessions with key CUSM employers throughout the academic year (minimum of 6-8).
  • Host the annual Elevator Pitch Perfect Event on campus with Sports Industry leaders and students, enabling them to hone critical networking and interview skills.
  • Develop Career Treks (content-related events with a focus on specific topics related to careers) with industry speakers and/or alums.
  • Direct and execute internal communications and marketing, including program and event promotion, registration, online information, and materials distribution; oversee development and production of the MS student weekly Jobs and Career newsletters; supervise maintenance and modification of MS student career websites, ensuring data and career materials are revised and updated in a timely manner.

Data and Infrastructure Responsibilities

  • Along with the Program Director, consult with MS faculty and program administrators to ensure cohesive delivery of career resources as part of the overall MS program's administration, while identifying ways to achieve timely and robust employment reporting; in cases of expansion or changes to MS program offerings, partner with the Program Director to ascertain student profiles, potential target employers/roles and where additional resources or programming may be required for advising or business development.
  • Lead the ongoing competitive benchmarking process and reporting for the program and the extent of marketplace demand for it; collaborate with CDL advisors as appropriate to align with best practices for MS career resource delivery.
  • Create and implement metrics for tracking, assessing, and reporting on career service outcomes.
  • Utilize data to inform internship and career opportunities with industry professionals and organizations.
  • Develop infrastructure to maintain resources including job and volunteer opportunities, professional development, and networking.

General Administration and Events Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with all members of the CUSM team on program/event development and corporate outreach on behalf of MS students. Support program and event execution including market-facing career events, workshops, webinars, panels, speaker series, advising groups, and recruiting-related programs; attend and participate in the delivery of events in consultation with the Program Director and other CUSM team members.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with MS students, the broader CUMS program administration, SPS administrators, and other relevant University departments to facilitate the integration of the Sports Management program with overall MS offerings.
  • Assist in ongoing program strategic and operational support, as needed, including planning sessions, workshop delivery, and support of the recruiting process.
  • Development and implementation of programmatic events, as needed.
  • Create, grow, and steward program support committees alongside the Program Director and Deputy Program Director as they are realized.
  • May supervise the work of one (1) or more employees.

Perform other duties and special projects as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree desirable.
  • 4 - 6 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with career advising in a higher educational setting and strong knowledge and experience with career coaching.
  • Experience in a high-level executive role in the sports industry and strong knowledge and experience with sports management.

Other Requirements

  • Must possess a vast professional network within the sports industry, and understand its ever-increasing complexity and changing dynamics.
  • Must be able to successfully develop, enhance, and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies, including students and sports organizations.
  • Substantial experience with computer programs, including MS Office applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be detail-oriented, self-starter, and able to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment; carefully balanced. multiple responsibilities simultaneously with short deadlines in a high-volume environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with changing priorities and possess strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills; strong coaching skills and understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds.
