Position Summary

The McFaline-Figueroa and Azizi Laboratories at the Biomedical Engineering Department of Columbia University are seeking a research technician ( grant funded- one year) interested in applying single-cell and spatial genomics to answer diverse questions in biology. A proportion of their effort will be directed toward assisting with general laboratory management. Basic experience in molecular biology, primary cell culture, general wet-lab techniques and programming experience in R and Python is required. Additional relevant experience to the position includes experience with mouse handling, molecular cloning, generation of next-generation sequencing libraries and computational modeling of genomic data. This role will work on ongoing research projects that apply single-cell and spatial genomics to identify factors that modulate tumor cell responses to various therapies. The role includes assisting with lab management, collaborating with other labs, and performing additional duties as directed by the Lab Director / PI.

The laboratories are located in the Columbia University Engineering Terrace.

The successful candidate will be organized, keep well-detailed research and lab management records, and be expected to work closely with the PIs and members of the laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • (40%)Research Projects:

    Apply single-cell and spatial genomics techniques to investigate factors influencing tumor cell responses to diverse therapies.

    Conduct experiments and analyze data related to the research projects.

    Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments, results, and analyses.

    Contribute to the preparation of research reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication.

  • (30%) Lab Management:

    Assist with the ordering of reagents and supplies necessary for ongoing research projects.

    Organize and maintain laboratory materials, including reagents, samples, and equipment.

    Ensure proper storage and labeling of all laboratory materials.

    Help maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment in compliance with regulatory standards.

  • (20%) Collaboration:

    Work collaboratively with other research labs on the application of single-cell and spatial genomics techniques.

    Share findings and methodologies with team members and collaborators.

    Participate in group meetings and contribute to discussions on research progress and future directions.

  • (10%)Additional Duties:

    Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Lab Director / PI.

    Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in single-cell and spatial genomics.

    Participate in professional development opportunities, including workshops and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a research environment. 1+ years of wet-lab experience is preferred.

  • Education:

    Bachelor's or Master's degree in biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering or related field is required.

  • Skills and Knowledge:

    Experience with molecular biology, mammalian cell culture and general wet-lab techniques.

    Responsible and independent.

    Interest in developing and applying genomic techniques.

    Knowledge of policies and protocols related to the functioning of a research lab such as general lab safety, management of lab inventory and supplies is a plus.
