The Salvation Army Recovery Specialist/Emergency Services (DHQ) in New York, New York
Overview
The Recovery Specialist provides direct human services assistance in all preparedness, response, and recovery efforts, particularly through street outreach programming. Through this programming, working in tandem with the Operations Specialist, they respond to individuals in crisis on the street providing for immediate felt needs and sharing informed referrals for further assistance. Provides information & referral support for Corps-based social services. Serves as a key support to departmental disaster recovery projects. The position is supervised by the Deputy Director.
Responsibilities
Lead and/or assist with all direct outreach client engagement
Develop and maintain long-term client relationships for continued needs assessment
Maintain all relevant training certifications to include, but not limited to, first aid, CPR, opioid overdose reversal/prevention, AED, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), signs of human trafficking etc.
Distribute Naloxone to high-risk areas both on the street and with existing service partners.
Develop and maintain service partner relationships and a resource guide for information and referral
Ensure client data is accurately recorded and tracked in a client database.
Provide key information and referral support to Corps-based social services.
Provide key support to departmental disaster recovery projects
Respond to needs presented through the divisional website contact form in a timely manner with follow-up.
Support the recruitment, training, and retention of local response team members in coordination w/ local Corps, including congregation members, volunteers, interns, employees, and Officers.
Attend seminars, conferences, training, and workshops as requested.
With approval, deploy to national/international disasters to support Salvation Army response/recovery effort
Qualifications
College degree in relevant field or 1-2 years’ experience
Experience in social/human services, emergency management, humanitarian assistance, and/or other related fields
Experience in direct client assistance and/or outreach
Experience in client case tracking systems
Certification in training and dispensing Naloxone or progress toward certification
Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal, and written communication skills
Developed and appropriate cultural and religious sensitivities
Ability to handle continuous involvement in a high-stress emergency setting
Valid driver’s license w/ the ability to drive large vehicles in a dense urban environment
Familiarity and training in working with those experiencing homelessness, dealing with substance misuse, people being trafficked, and other marginalized populations
Bi/multi-lingual, preferred
General knowledge of The Salvation Army, preferred
