American Express National Bank (AENB) is American Express’ chartered national bank. Headquartered in Utah, AENB is the single largest entity within American Express’ business, currently representing more than 50 percent of the company’s Card Member Spending, nearly 90 percent of its lending, and more than 60 percent its of revenues.

American Express National Bank provides American Express’ customers with access to consistent payments, financing, and savings products in three ways, including:

  • Issuing and servicing charge and credit cards for the consumer and small business segments;

  • Offering commercial loans to small and midsized merchants, as well as installment loans to consumers;

  • Maintaining a Personal Savings program consisting of high-yield savings accounts and certificate of deposit products.

Colleagues across American Express’ key business units (known as “affiliates”) use their experience and skills to support AENB in executing on its strategy. In addition, many of American Express’ executives also serve as officers of AENB. AENB is governed by its own Board of Directors. It is regulated, supervised, and examined by several regulatory agencies, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for wide-ranging safety and soundness and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for adherence to federal consumer financial laws. All AENB colleagues, officers, and affiliates have a long-standing commitment to driving strong and standardized risk management practices in accordance with the OCC’s Heightened Standards guidelines.

The Corporate Functions Control Management team within AENB will serve as the business unit Control Management function for several corporate groups including Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C); Colleague Experience Group (CEG), General Counsel’s Organization (GCO); Global Risk & Compliance (GRC); Enterprise Strategy (ES); and American Express National Bank Headquarters (AENB HQ).

The objective of the Corporate Functions Control Management Governance team is to establish the Operational Risk and Controls strategy for Corporate Functions, set up a foundational governance structure that ensures operational risks are identified, assessed, and managed in compliance with enterprise Operational Risk Management programs and reporting.

Corporate Functions Control Management is looking for a Manager of Process Risk focused on ensuring control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our organization. It will involve extensive collaboration with multiple partners across numerous business units, functional areas, and geographies.

The Manager, Corporate Functions Control Management Process Risk Reduction will:

  • Support identification and prioritization areas within BU processes that require risk reduction measures (e.g., assist in coordinating across First Line of Defense (1LoD) risk identification team)

  • Execute on process risk reduction, leveraging enterprise support as needed to ensure timely resolution of vertical and horizontal (i.e., within BU or across processes that extend beyond the BU) issues that are of highest priority and/or most significant impact to the enterprise

  • Assist in conducting independent root cause analyses focused on identifying underlying process vulnerabilities to prevent potential Operational Risks (ORs), with a focus on the most common or high-risk issues and/or losses, based on comprehensive methodology (e.g., comprehensive risk-based prioritization) to prevent recurrence, and inform control design/ enhancement

  • Provide insights on process risk issues and mitigation strategies

  • Support BU with design of controls and processes, including modifications to enhance processes/controls to improve proactive risk mitigations

  • Document control design effectiveness and help address thematic control gaps across processes/products

  • Provide independent support for resolution of high-risk issues, and conduct independent testing of issues to ensure complete & effective resolution

  • Monitor and track the implementation of process changes, ensuring they are effective in reducing risk and align with the risk appetite

  • Document learnings from improving controls to elevate the process risk reduction capabilities within the BU and across the enterprise

  • Foster a culture of risk awareness and ongoing improvement within the team and the broader organization.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 Years experience in operational risk management (e.g., within Risk and/or Internal Audit function) Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities

  • Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards

  • Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Mgmt., or related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc) or certifications are advantageous

  • Experience in at least one of the following:

  • Identifying and prioritizing areas that require risk reduction measures

  • Executing on process risk reduction to ensure timely resolution of issues that are of highest priority and/or most significant impact

  • Conducting root cause analyses focused on identifying process vulnerabilities to prevent potential operational risks (ORs), with a focus on the most common or high-risk issues and/or Operational Risk Events (OREs), based on comprehensive methodology (e.g., comprehensive risk-based prioritization) to prevent recurrence, and inform control design/ enhancement

  • Providing support for resolution of high-risk issues, and conducting independent testing of issues to ensure complete & effective resolution

  • Monitoring and tracking the implementation of process changes, ensuring they are effective in reducing risk and align with the risk appetite

  • Experience in financial services industry and/or management consulting

Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually bonus benefits
