Join the Planning and Sustainability team as a Design Intern and play a key role in shaping the future of this iconic urban landscape. At Port Authority, we manage vital transportation and infrastructure assets essential to the region. The World Trade Center campus is a 16-acre cornerstone of economic opportunity, cultural vibrancy, and community connection—a global destination and a thriving community asset.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects while sharpening your design, prototyping, and creative problem-solving skills. You’ll build your portfolio, master industry-standard 2D and 3D design tools, and collaborate with experienced professionals to make a lasting impact.

Responsibilities

  • Unleash Your Creativity: Tackle urban planning challenges with innovative design solutions that enhance public spaces and facilities.

  • Envision and Implement Activations: Contribute to public space programming and activations that bring the campus to life and encourage community interaction and engagement.

  • Prototype the Future: Develop functional and aesthetically pleasing product prototypes that help realize our public space visions.

  • Research & Innovate: Dive into research to uncover new insights and establish benchmarks for cutting-edge design practices.

  • Collaborate & Create: Work closely with a dynamic team in a hybrid environment, balancing remote, field, and office work.

  • Share Your Vision: Participate in briefings and present your findings and designs to division and department leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college/university through Summer 2025 and into the Fall 2025 semester

  • Academic or practical experience in design, urban planning, architecture, or related fields

  • If invited to interview, you'll be asked to submit a portfolio showcasing proficiency in 2D and 3D design tools

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D design tools such as Rhino, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, wanting to refine further and expand these skills.

  • Excellent communication, research, and analytical skills.

  • Self-starter with a genuine interest in contributing to the vibrancy and success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Familiarity and interest in design thinking are preferred.

Internship Details

  • The start date is expected to be in January or February 2025

  • This internship will be part-time (15-20 hours per week) during the school year and full-time (36.25 hours per week) during the summer

  • The format is expected to be hybrid

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31(the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
