Title: Interim Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning (LEAVE COVERAGE)

Reports To: Associate Director, Teaching and Learning

FLSA: Full-time, Temporary

Dates Immediate – June 6, 2025

Compensation: $85,400 - $97,600

Location: New York, NY (Hybrid)

This is a full-time, exempt position with a hybrid schedule requiring in-person work three days (3) a week and virtual work two (2) days a week. The typical weekly schedule is as follows:

Weekly Schedule

  • Tuesday - Saturday (September-May)

  • Tuesday-Friday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM*

  • Saturday 8:00am-4:00pm**

  • Monday - Friday (June)

  • Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm

*May shift with advanced notice based on the needs of the program.

**Saturday Academy takes place at our partner sites at Baruch College’s Vertical Campus and LIU Brooklyn.

OVERVIEW

SEO Scholars is a non-profit focused on improving educational outcomes for students that come from underserved and historically underrepresented backgrounds. Our free eight-year academic program gets low-income public high school students to and through college–with a 100% college admissions rate and 85% college graduation rate. RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructor Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to forecast hiring needs each semester.

  • Determine the eligibility for rehire of existing instructional staff; survey and track returning instructors.

  • Edit job descriptions to accurately reflect responsibilities and program dates.

  • Support the Teaching & Learning team in corresponding with candidates and scheduling interviews.

  • Conduct instructor interviews and support the instructor selection process.

  • Support the Teaching & Learning team in determining instructor placements and processing contracts in partnership with People & Culture.

  • Support Teaching & Learning in ensuring smooth onboarding process including but not limited to technology setup, orientation facilitation, and schedule development.

  • Collaborate across programming, operations, and curriculum teams to facilitate a robust instructor orientation at the beginning of each semester.

Instructional Team Leadership

  • Create and nurture an inclusive and supportive instructional team culture.

  • Directly supervise 40+ part-time instructors for weekday programming, Saturday Academy, tutoring, and Summer Academy programming for multiple grade levels and subjects including math and ELA.

  • Manage Part-Time Instructor attendance, including reviewing and approving timesheets on Paylocity and troubleshooting timekeeping and payroll issues with HR.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Teaching and Learning to support the development, implementation, and refinement of instructor observation, coaching practices, and professional development opportunities.

  • Support the coaching practices of Lead Instructors across all grade levels through regular check-ins, electronic communication, and the maintenance of observation and coaching tools.

  • Support the Teaching & Learning team in editing Lead Instructor applications.

  • Support the Teaching & Learning team in selecting and placing Lead Instructors for each semester.

  • Support the development and facilitation of professional development sessions across all grade levels.

Curriculum & Instruction Operations

  • Develop the development of instructional resources, including the creation of instructor schedules, dashboards, programming-instructor collaboration documents, updates to SEO Instructor Handbook, etc.

  • Oversee instructional operations and serve as instructor point of contact during in-person and virtual programming.

  • Liaise with Curriculum & Instruction Team in New York to ensure all instructors are equipped with the necessary materials and content to implement SEO curriculum with fidelity.

  • Liaise with Operations and Program staff to ensure effective program delivery and outcomes during programming.

  • Support evaluation of academic performance data and suggest modifications to curricula and instructional approach to improve academic outcomes for students.

Fall 2024 Semester Only

  • Directly coach a cohort of math instructors including conducting pre-observation processes, recording observation notes, completing formal data collection processes, and facilitating debrief meetings.

  • Use SEO’s Indicators of Effective Instruction framework to identify strengths and areas of growth for the SEO instructor community and encourage instructors to observe others based on skill development.

  • Support math instructors’ understanding and teaching of SEO curriculum. This may include, but is not limited to, reviewing upcoming lessons, providing tips for teaching content-specific skills, and providing additional resources for subject-specific pedagogy.

  • Plan and lead facilitate grade-level meetings with support from the Teaching & Learning team, content teams, and other Lead Instructors in your grade.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree in education, social sciences, math/STEM, or equivalent professional development and training required.

  • At least 3-5 years of high school or middle school classroom teaching experience. Experience as a lead teacher and/or school administrator is strongly preferred.

  • 2+ years of people management experience; must have working knowledge of time & attendance and employment practices. Direct experience managing remote employees is a plus.

  • Demonstrated passion for closing the opportunity and academic achievement gap at the high school and college level for first-generation and historically marginalized student populations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to write/create training and professional development that is timely and reflects current and relevant research and practices in anti-oppressive, culturally inclusive, and accessible pedagogy.

  • Working knowledge of extant research in high impact practices in education, including best practices of student success for first generation students and historically underrepresented student groups.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with SEO instructors and staff across disciplines and responsibilities, in face-to face large group and individual settings, as well as mediated modes, such as email, Zoom, phone, etc.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a wide range of SEO community stakeholders.

  • Strong working knowledge of inclusive classroom pedagogy and principles of universal design for learning (UDL).

  • Ability to produce clear, professional, and accessible slides and other presentational media.

  • Ability to provide meaningful feedback to instructors.

  • Strong working knowledge of effective skills and tools for collaboration, including conflict resolution, and ability to work with colleagues from other units and offices around campus on shared programming and initiatives.

  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills.

  • Strong working knowledge of online tools used to support teacher development, including, but not limited to: G-suite (i.e., Documents, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Groups), Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and Adobe Creative Cloud (i.e., Acrobat Pro/Nitro Pro).

  • Ability to apply consultative skills to determine professional development needs.

  • Ability to meaningfully organize and use cloud storage solutions (e.g., Google Drive, Box, etc.).

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees.
