D. E. Shaw Fundamental Equities Analyst in New York, New York

Work within the Fundamental Equities (“FE”) group to support fundamental activist and long-short equity investing in publicly traded equity securities. Perform financial analyses for all sectors, including but not limited to technology, media and communications, industrials, consumer and retail, healthcare, financials and energy. Perform analyses to support decisions within activist investing. Conduct differentiated, bottoms-up fundamental analyses of companies, business models, relevant industry metrics, and industries. Perform detailed valuations and construct in-depth company financial models. Evaluate new investment opportunities, identify and analyze relevant industry developments and then synthesize and present investment ideas to the portfolio manager. This position is based in New York, NY. Telecommuting/remote work is permitted within commuting distance two days per week.REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, or a related field of study, plus two years of experience with modeling financial statements including detailed, bottoms-up revenue builds and operating case management; Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); securities valuation; assessment of demand drivers, competition, business models, and unit economics; business model and competitive landscape analysis; stock-picking; macroeconomic concepts and current macroeconomic conditions; meetings with C-level executives at S&P 500 companies to discuss and understand business strategy and operations; fundamental research on S&P 500 companies and translating analyses into alpha generating investment outcomes; preparing investment analyses and memoranda for portfolio management and investment committees and leading discussions with committees to make investment decisions involving S&P 500 companies; evaluating investments in S&P 500 companies and identifying asymmetric investment opportunities, including those that involve analyzing mergers and acquisitions, industry cycles, hidden assets, management change, underappreciated assets or product lines, and other forms of strategic and operational change; conducting due diligence interviews with former executives, competitors, suppliers, and customers of companies that are being targeted for investment research; and, designing and conducting large-scale surveys of customers and competitors of target companies for purposes of advancing investment and research agendas.
