This position will report on-site at the JFK Redevelopment Program to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey's Office of the Chief Health & Safety Officer. OCHSO plays a vital role in furthering the mission of the Port Authority by ensuring the workplace meets all occupational health and safety legal expectations and actively supports the highest quality occupational health and safety programs to ensure the safe movement of the Port Authority’s customers, partners, employees, and stakeholders every day. Agency Safety Management, within the OCHSO, maintains and develops safety, fire protection, occupational health, and public health programs and policies for the PANYNJ. The Food Safety Team is seeking a Food & Safety Design Specialist to support the JFKR Program in design reviews and new construction inspections. The ideal candidate will have experience reviewing architectural drawings of new food establishments and conducting pre-operational health inspections for newly constructed establishments. Under the direction of the Food Safety Supervisor, the selected candidate will be responsible for:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing architectural drawings of new food establishments and writing, documenting, and delivering comments based on code requirements within the required timeframe.

  • Completing Final Health Construction for newly constructed food establishment; will complete the required inspection reports within the required timeframe and provide follow-up as necessary

  • Coordinate with other project and facility staff to ensure timely design reviews and inspections

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Do:

  • Performs office management engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares meeting agendas and meeting minutes, assists in processing and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates, and other deliverables.

  • Assists with and monitors construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Reads, comprehends, and checks for compliance with applicable contract documents.

  • Performs or observes on-site material testing. Reviews plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc. and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.

  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.

  • Reviews contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness and consistency. Regularly reviews contractor's as-built mark-ups, documents project progress using video and photos.

  • Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions and assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.

  • Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Associates degree in relevant field and 4 years relevant experience, or

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or related field and 2 years relevant experience.

What You'll Bring :

  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience (3+ preferred) with architectural drawings of new food establishments and conducting pre-operational health inspections for newly constructed establishment.

  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.

  • The successful candidate will be subject to a comprehensive background check and must pass a fingerprint-based 10-year criminal history record to obtain an airport Security Identification Display (SIDA) credential. The candidate must be able to maintain SIDA credentials throughout employment in this position.

What We Prefer:

  • NYS FSIO-I or FSIO-II Certification or NJ Licensed Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Sanitarian or Health Inspector Licenses or equivalent.

  • Experience in conducting design review of demolition plans; architectural plans; diagramming specifications for electrical, mechanical ventilation and plumbing systems, Kitchen/Food Service drawings and specifications for review and approval.

  • Experience with food safety and public health.

  • Familiarity with NYC, NY State & NJ State public health regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting comprehensive pre-operational inspections and documenting findings of the inspections in written reports for newly constructed establishments.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with internal staff at all levels and external officials from Public Health Agencies.

  • Ability to interpret analytical results and develop appropriate recommendations.

  • Demonstrated experience in problem-solving and project management.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, multitask and work independently.

  • Proficiency in eBuilder, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The approximate pay range for New York is $70,831.98 - $132,809.96. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
