Who You Are

You enjoy working with databases and will lead the managing and scaling of Justwork’s datastores in order for data to be accessed in a performant, reliable and safe manner. In addition to keeping our database systems running smoothly 24/7/365, you will work on improving the tooling, orchestration, monitoring surrounding our datastores as well as developing a strategy for future growth. You will bring your expertise to the SRE and Infrastructure teams as well as the rest of our engineering teams.

Your Success Profile What You Will Work On

  • Define and implement a strategy for scaling our systems and plan for growth by delivering production solutions that scale, identifying automation points, and proactively proposing ideas on how to improve efficiency

  • Address database-related related problems; pursue short and long term problem resolution, drive root cause analysis (RCA) and risk management processes

  • Review and tune databases for optimal system performance including modifying parameters to improve throughput and effectively utilize system resources

  • Participate in after-hours support and may be required to perform production releases or maintenance operations during non-peak hours

  • Work with infrastructure engineers to define and execute backup and restore testing, as a part of disaster recovery plan

  • Work closely with all operational groups to ensure SOX compliance

  • Work on the database reliability and performance of our datastores

  • Improve our observability, alerting and monitoring

  • Help mitigate database related incidents

  • Provide support and help debug database issues

    Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional hands on experience with database systems, in particular MySQL and PostgreSQL

  • Experience supporting high-availability DB clusters, including replication/sharding, and zero-downtime migrations

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to grasp and explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical people

  • Self-motivated and self-accountable for delivery and adherence to standards and delivery timelines

  • Familiarity with working on Cloud Platforms such as Amazon Web Services

  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation tools (Puppet, Ansible, Terraform)

  • Highly fluent in SQL and Python, with firm understanding of different language paradigms

  • Experience with Ruby/Rails or Golang is a plus

  • Have solid knowledge of the internals of MySQL

  • Have strong programming skills

  • Strong experience with Linux systems and shell scripting

  • Knowledge of caching technologies (e.g. memcached, redis) is a plus

  • Experience with governing data security and compliance preferred

    The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is targeted at $115,000.00 to $155,000.00 per year.

    Actual compensation is based on multiple factors that are unique to each candidate, including and not limited to skill set, level of relevant experience, and specific work location. Salary ranges for positions based in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
