Position Summary

The Vagelos Institute for Biomedical Research Education (VIBRE) in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) is home to PhD students pursuing the most creative, potentially disruptive ideas in biomedical science and spurs the training of more physician-scientists. As part of the Office for Research (OFR), the VIBRE is responsible for fostering an optimal academic research environment to cultivate the growth of scientists who have a sustained commitment to solving longstanding medical problems The VIBRE functions across departments, centers, and institutes to foster interdisciplinary research training for biomedical PhD students. The Trainee Success & Community Coordinator will work with internal stakeholders and external partners to guide and support students throughout their research training activities as well as foster a nurturing educational environment. The ideal incumbent has an understanding of trainee learning solutions and experience successfully guiding students through a program curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting administrative and program operations for the biomedical degree
  • programs.
  • Coordinates related events, special projects, and student activities, including informational sessions, interviews, and events.
  • Works closely with interdisciplinary teams across Columbia to continually guide students from
  • recruitment to graduation, including admission requirements, degree requirements, campus
  • policies/procedures, campus services, and funding opportunities.
  • Primary point of contact at the program-level for students.
  • Gathers reviews of effectiveness and stakeholder satisfaction and ensures adequate support, especially
  • during peak periods.
  • Supports learning success of students by coordinating development, delivery, and ongoing evaluation
  • of programs via key activities, including but not limited to gathering and preparing data for teaching
  • and assessment tools.
  • Works closely with interdisciplinary teams across Columbia to deliver research and academic experiences for students.
  • Provides basic teaching and curriculum development support to faculty and staff.
  • Plans and executes trainee events and program sessions, including creating materials and preparing presenters.
  • Assists with execution of communication plans, including designing website content and preparing supporting materials for programs.
  • Assists in scheduling meetings, preparing materials, note taking, and other administrative tasks.
  • Works with interdisciplinary teams, leaders, alumni, students and affiliates to plan logistics for special events, workshops, and informative sessions.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely data entry in systems.
  • Serves as a liaison for workshops, recruitment events, and educational sessions on career services, admissions Includes but is not limited to preparing materials, planning communications, and coordinating schedules.
  • Drafts wide range of written communications, including newsletters.
  • Serves as a liaison for divisional projects related to the education and research mission.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

People

  • Cultivates stakeholder relationships, often triages initial requests, and serves as liaison for program related activities, such as questions related to the curriculum, courses, lab rotations, or examinations.
  • Helps train and onboard members of the Biomedical Research training programs.

Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with external regulations as well as VP&S, GSAS, and Department policies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills required.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Outlook, Excel, and Word)

  • Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication, and organizational skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Columbia University Research or Education systems and protocols is a strong plus.

  • Prior experience in an academic and research environment preferred
