Division/Program Summary Description:

The Bureau of Public Health Clinics has the mission of improving the sexual heath of all New Yorkers. To achieve this the Bureau provides direct clinic services to people seeking sexual health care, and services to sex partners; monitors disease trends; provides education and training to providers and community groups, conducts research, and develop policies to improve sexual health and wellness. The Bureau of Public Health Clinics operates 8 STI clinics throughout New York City (NYC).

Position Summary:

The Associate Laboratory Microbiologist II will report directly to the STI Laboratory Supervisor and perform STAT laboratory testing on the specimens collected from patients vising the STI clinics.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs STAT moderately complex clinical laboratory and quality control testing in the STI Comprehensive Laboratories.

  • Supervises, trains, assigns work to, and evaluates work performance of staff performing STAT moderately complex clinical laboratory tests in the STI Comprehensive testing laboratories.

  • Maintains a program of quality control and participates in a program of quality assurance.

  • Advises staff on appropriate methods and techniques and assist in trouble shooting any issues.

  • Performs or oversees the following functions: - Orders and maintains an adequate stock of media, reagents, and other supplies

  • Prepares, labels, packages, and standardizes laboratory media, reagents, controls, and specimens for use in analyses.

  • Assists in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Prepare correspondence and narrative/statistical reports.

  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by supervisor or Lab Director.

Qualifications

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in medical technology or in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and one year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties; or

  2. Ninety college credits from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by either (a) or (b) below, and one year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties.

(a) For those whose training was completed prior to September 15, 1963: a total of at least 24 credits in chemistry and biology courses combined, including at least nine credits in chemistry, of which six credits must be in inorganic chemistry; and including at least 12 credits in biology courses

pertinent to the medical sciences.

(b) For those whose training was completed after September 15, 1963: 16 credits in chemistry courses acceptable towards a major in chemistry, including at least six credits in inorganic chemistry; and 16 credits in biology courses acceptable towards a major in biology; and three credits in mathematics.
