The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Associate Director reports to the Executive Director of Student Engagement /Undergraduate Student Life (USL) within Columbia College (CC) and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Primary responsibilities include oversight for student organizational advising including leadership development, training, and education for student groups. The Associate Director supervises professional staff members who advise a variety of performance, activist, and service-oriented groups and ensures best practices in advising competencies for USL. Additional priorities include: oversight of the student group adjudication process, attending to student developmental issues, serve as the adviser to the student governing boards, financial boards and specific organizations, supports recruitment and training of Graduate Assistants for Student Engagement, acts as a liaison to University Events Management and Facilities on behalf of group advisers, and leads the USL adviser meetings. The Associate Director will provide individual support to student leaders in social, leadership, and identity development.

Responsibilities

Advising, Training and Leadership Development

  • Manage comprehensive organizational advising system within USL to support the success and developmental growth of student organizations, including manuals and training guides.
  • Lead USL staff in coordination of student group activities and assist members in recruiting, engaging and training leaders and attracting participants. Provide comprehensive training and leadership development opportunities for students.
  • Develop workshops, retreats and training opportunities for student organizations, governing boards and student councils.
  • Oversee individual and student group appreciation of outstanding contributions to the Columbia community. Chair committee for annual leadership awards recognition.
  • Ensure best practice in advising competencies for USL advisers.
  • In collaboration with USL staff, campus partners and student leaders oversee group adjudication.
  • Share information with USL staff to work with club leaders and officers on increasing inclusivity and accessibility to all parts of campus.

Student Group Advising

  • Advise the Activities Board at Columbia (ABC), Student Governing Board (SGB) and Interschool Governing Board (IGB) and Financials at Columbia (F@CU). Oversee recognition of student organizations; provide training and development to the governing boards. Review their policies and update to be in compliance with University Policy, administrative procedure and other applicable guidelines.
  • Develop strong advisory relationships with leaders of student organizations, governing boards, student councils, and their members. Inform advisees about relevant university and office policies and interpret policies as necessary. Assist advisees in critical decision making by helping explore options and consequences of actions.
  • Monitor student organization budgets; negotiate contracts with performers, speakers and service providers.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with partner offices throughout the University to facilitate student group activities and events.

Supervision, Program Planning, Management and Assessment

  • Supervises three full time staff members. Provide leadership development and monitor performance of staff members.
  • Oversee leadership development, community building programming and initiatives, with involvement from students.
  • Implement programs and services that support student involvement, development, learning and leadership.
  • Oversee planning and organization of club/organization/administrative programs and events.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop and implement outreach programs.
  • Assess quality and effectiveness of programs and services.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Support summer orientation planning and execution as needed.

Evening and weekend hours are necessary, as is overnight travel for student group training and development retreats

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3-5 years related experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of student development theory, leadership development theory, student governance and community building required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in staff supervision, organizational advising, leadership development, student activities, and event planning.
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability working in an urban setting, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience working with diverse student population.
  • Strong organizational and time and project management skills.
