Simon & Schuster is seeking a creative and high energy Associate Director of Publicity for the Simon Element, Marysue Rucci Books, Simon Acumen imprints with a minimum of 7-10 years’ experience in book publicity to help plan and execute campaigns for a diverse range of non-fiction and fiction, with a special focus on non-fiction. This role will spearhead high-level campaigns for a variety of front list, priority titles and bestselling authors from the early stages of planning and strategy through publication and campaign execution. The position reports to the Senior Director of Publicity and Marketing and will manage at least one direct report.

Responsibilities:

• Manage all aspects of a publicity campaign for approximately 2-3 titles a month

• Pitch and secure top national and regional TV, print, radio, and online media

• Develop and maintain close working relationships with members of the press and seek out new media outlets

• Plan and coordinate author appearances and multi-city author tours, including independently overseeing travel arrangements, confirming bookstore events, pitching local media and managing comprehensive tour schedules

• Write pitch letters, press releases, and other creative press material

• Work closely with the publicity team as well as authors, agents, booksellers and key in-house departments including editorial, marketing, sales and subsidiary rights

• Work closely with authors on all aspects of publicity, including briefing authors on how to handle interviews and accompanying authors to interviews and events

• Represent the imprint at various meetings, functions, and industry events

Requirements:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Strong attention to detail to handle multiple publicity campaigns simultaneously

• Must be well-organized and able to prioritize and meet deadlines under pressure

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel

• Thorough familiarity with the media

• Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team

• At least 7 years of experience in book publishing publicity or related media

• Established national and regional media contacts including TV, radio, print and online

• Established relationships with bookstores and some large lecture venues

• Strong public presentation skills

• Must be a creative and strategic thinker, as well as assertive and persuasive

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
