WSP USA Associate Consultant, Mechanical Engineering (Rail Vehicle Engineer) in New York, New York

This Opportunity

Provides support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the design, development, building, testing, and inspecting of mechanical systems on infrastructure, building, and construction projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, concept development, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimal integration of automatic temperature control, air distribution, hydronic, and plumbing systems, equipment and processes. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned installation, construction, and operation specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Assessment of electrical or mechanical systems located on a rail vehicle and associated maintenance needs for those systems.

  • Review design submittals and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings. Participate in formal design review meetings and technical working sessions.

  • Oversee construction services performed by a rail vehicle manufacture, material inspection and testing, and construction management for rail vehicle transit projects.

  • Vehicle technologies will include streetcars, light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, and high-speed rail passenger vehicles and locomotives.

  • Preparation of progress reports and Technical Specification documents of electrical and electronic systems.

  • Conduct first-article-inspections and witness electro-mechanical equipment undergoing qualification testing, including; shock and vibration, environmental, electrical, and functional testing.

  • Technical responsibility for the preparation of technical reports in accordance with client's requests.

  • Investigation of rolling stock and related systems issues as requested by the client.

  • Active participation in new business efforts including assisting with new pursuits.

  • Perform billable work and other tasks as assigned and best fits training and ability.

  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

  • Preferred knowledge in rail vehicle design; specification; procurement support; inspections, testing and commissioning support; and overhaul of rail vehicles.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline.

  • 1 to 3 years of relevant rail vehicle experience.

  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.

  • Familiarity with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.

  • Highly familiar with relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM).

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification.

  • Prior design experience.

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $88,290 - $107,910

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
