Position Summary
Assists in the oversight of the operational activities of multiple MSKCC/WCM’s Vivaria on a rotational basis as directed by the Manager, Husbandry and Operations, reporting to the Facility Manager, responsibilities are performed with minimal direction, to ensure efficient and effective operations, adherence to regulations and policies, and quality care for animals.
Job Responsibilities
Supervise the daily activities of staff. Participate in hiring, evaluating, and disciplinary action of animal care staff. Respond to employee questions and provide guidance. Provide oversight of the facility when a Manager for the Vivaria is out.
Help manage the facility operations. Maintain quality control to ensure proper practices are followed. Assist in the assessment of staffing. Develop schedules to ensure coverage. Communicate and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
May participate in the development of written protocols for animal care, sanitation, and environmental monitoring. Present drafts for review and approval.
Ensure space for animal housing. Direct staff in procedures necessary to ensure disease control and treatment programs as determined by the veterinary staff. Coordinate the reporting of animal health problems to appropriate staff.
Coordinates and assists in the collection of animal census data. Collects and enters census data into a database. Assists in security system maintenance for card readers as well as entering new and removing old staff who utilize the animal facility.
Ensure animal care staff is appropriately trained in all husbandry procedures. Review staff training needs with leads. Assist in the planning of and delivers individual or group training sessions. Assist in maintenance of in-service training records.
Assist in coordination of orders and ensures that receipt and delivery of animals is properly performed. Provide oversight of receiving including garbage removal, vending machines, gas delivery and pick up, medical waste removal, and laboratory orders.
Maintains and enhances professional growth and assists with quality improvement initiatives through participation in various management projects. Keeps abreast of current activities in the area of animal husbandry and animal care.
Education
- High School Diploma
Experience
An Associate’s or higher degree in a related discipline is preferred.
Certification by AALAS as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) required, although Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification is preferred. If not LATG, must obtain LATG certification within 2 years of hire date.
2 years supervisory experience with additional prior experience in the capacity of a Lead role in an animal care and use program is required.
Must be knowledgeable in the operation of a large animal resource facility and program, including facility operations, equipment function, specialized husbandry procedures, and staffing levels.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Administrative skills required include organizing and maintaining files/records and approving and processing requisitions.
Math skills required to account for payments, verify reports and to analyze bills and invoices.
Strong verbal, written communications, and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Endnote is highly desired.
Licenses and Certifications
- AALAS certification at Laboratory Animal Technical (LAT) level or higher
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Protective equipment including uniforms, steel toed boots, masks, aprons, gloves and head covers are provided and required for specific activities. Lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying heavy animals (dogs, pigs, NHP), equipment and supplies weighing up to 55 lbs. Visual concentration, manual dexterity, hand eye coordination and standing for extended periods.
Employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, unpleasant odors, laboratory animals, animal excreta and hot and humid surroundings. Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches, needles and other sharp instruments, infectious agents, radioisotopes, toxic chemicals, and radiation Work assignments may include weekends and holidays and requires occasional after hour contact. On Call rotation required.
