Job Description

BACKGROUND : The Adult Education Department provides in-person and remote ESL classes to adults 18 and older, facilitates cultural orientation for resettlement clients, coordinates with other IRC departments to facilitate workforce development workshops, and refers clients internally and externally to additional services identified during case management. In addition, the Adult Education Department provides support to clients through special projects such as the Afghan Women’s Group.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Afghan Women’s Group and Special Events Intern will support the Cultural Orientation and Intake Specialist with planning, coordinating, and implementing the Afghan Women Support Group and other future projects as needed.

This is an unpaid internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

· Assist the Cultural Orientation and Intake Specialist with developing and administrating surveys for the Afghan women’s group.

· Assist in creating a curriculum for the Afghan Women’s Group with a gender lens- topics. The curriculum should include but not be limited to women’s health, workforce development, parent’s rights in NYC public schools, and civics.

· Support monitoring and replying to email inquiries or phone calls about upcoming workshops and ensuring that the correct parties have received communication.

· Support with referrals to other services and educational programs for Afghan girls within the IRC.

· Conduct Outreach phone calls to promote upcoming workshops.

· Develop advertising materials and translate to Dari and Pashto as needed.

· Support other special events, projects, and initiatives as needed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES :

· Student will learn about the various management responsibilities of a complex educational program.

· Student will learn how to coordinate and communicate with different stakeholders to plan and implement educational workshops and special events.

· Student will learn to work with diverse staff

· Student will learn about programs and services provided to refugees, migrants, and displaced people.

REQUIREMENTS :

· Current undergraduate or graduate student in Education, Non-profit Management or related field, or within one year of graduation

· Strong organizational and analytical skills

· Flexible and able to solve problems

· Excellent writing and oral communication skills

· Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience desirable

· Fluent in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word

· Experience in Box, Microsoft Teams, and Google Drive desirable

· Experience in Canva desirable

· Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations desirable

· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team

· Fluent in Dari, Farsi, and/or Pashto is highly desirable.
