Summary This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Coast Guard District 8, Sector New Orleans, New Orleans, LA Responsibilities In this position, you will be responsible for information management, situational awareness, command and control in a pivotal policy role from day one. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Overseeing and monitoring the District’s response to Search and Rescue (SAR) cases in order to minimize loss of life and property at sea. Developing search action plans while investigating and coordinating ongoing activities and operations within the Area of Responsibility (AOR). Providing command and control over Coast Guard assets in all maritime law enforcement operations within the District AOR. Maintaining command and control of response operations for oil discharges and hazardous substance releases within District AOR. Analyzing and disseminating a variety of nautical data such as current, tides and weather. Interacting with federal, state, and local government agencies while coordinating response to SAR, Law Enforcement, PWCS, MER, and other Coast Guard missions. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship is required. The applicant is subject to pre-appointment and random drug testing. Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position. This position requires a Secret clearance. A one-year probationary period may be required. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service. A final offer of employment is contingent upon a negative drug test result. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade. Qualifications You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one of the following: A. One year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent that demonstrates the Collecting initial information to classify search and rescue (SAR) cases and begin case documentation; Providing tracking and other sensor information to support missions; Providing course and speed information to response assets to coordinate arrivals at a particular point; and writing final situation reports about search and rescue (SAR) cases. OR B. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related OR C. A combination of successfully completed equivalent education and experience. This will be calculated using your resume and unofficial transcripts or a list of courses/course hours submitted with your application. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have a positive education requirement. Student Loan Incentive: Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent or term position may be eligible for student loan repayment up to $10,000 (pre-tax) for one calendar year.
