Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV- Green Creek NJ for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Performs professional entry-level experiments using standard basic techniques.
  • Keeps records of work performed and maintains a database as required.
  • Collects, sorts, processes samples, performs preliminary analysis, and analyzes data.
  • Maintains and keeps the workplace and laboratory organized in a clean and safe manner in accordance with established procedures.
  • Serves as an assistant in the performance of experiments.
  • Trains and leads students through various laboratory related activities.
  • May assist in performing animal experiments, animal surgery, and animal care.
  • Completes work under immediate and close supervision, with specific instructions on routine or semi-routine work and/or within established work parameters for the unit.
  • Makes decisions or choices following standard practices and procedures. Work is usually reviewed upon completion.
  • Performs professional work requiring general knowledge and basic application and use of concepts, theories, terminology, and practices.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a related scientific field or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have a basic knowledge of the particular research discipline; skills are normally acquired through an accumulation of work experiences and/or specific work related training programs.
  • Good communication skills and computer literacy are required.
  • Knowledge of techniques for rearing anl maintaining marine organisms, basic knowledge of seawater pumping and filtration systems, effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups including other site staff researchers and students.
  • Ability to operate and repair all terrain vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of shellfish hatchery operations and basic algal culture systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of experience in hatchery/nursery operations and the maintenance and culture of marine organisms.
  • Masters degree preferred.
Equipment Utilized
  • All terrain vehicles, pressure washer, general power tools, water pumps, air pumps and blowers, algal culture technology, shellfish hatchery equipment, flow cytometry and general proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Office, R, and databases
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to work in a research lab/field setting and be able to lift 45 pounds or a 5-gallon bucket of seawater.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in adverse conditions.
  • Must be able to physically navigate tidal flats in waters, and climb stairs, ramps and ladders
