Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher I (KOHUT Research Laboratory) for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position independently and collaboratively manages/oversees the Kohut Lab within the Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL), including laboratory staff and students and the procurement, operation, and maintenance of highly specialized equipment and data.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Performs complex, high-level research and experiments using innovative methodologies and advanced techniques, contributing to the overall success of the lab's scientific goals.
  • Responsible for thorough documentation of research activities, including the maintenance and management of databases and the development of detailed reports.
  • Resolves a wide range of complex, multidisciplinary challenges with a creative and solutions-oriented approach.
  • Oversees laboratory operations, ensuring the effective management of staff, and the procurement, operation, and maintenance of highly specialized equipment.
  • Provides leadership in training and mentoring researchers, students, and technicians, fostering a collaborative and learning-driven environment within the lab.
  • Takes lead in overall software development and project management including oversight of staff on projects (Grad assistants, Research Analysts, and student workers); leads multiple high-visibility research projects, managing project timelines, and deliverables.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Master's degree in biological oceanography or geosciences that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general biological and geosciences research principles and practices.
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience working in a research lab including relevant professional research experience with streaming data, data analysis and visualization, data technologies supporting science.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • This position requires routine collaboration between students, scientists, and industry to meet scientific and research objectives, therefore, the incumbent must have excellent and demonstrated communication skills, environmental data management and computer literacy.
  • Also requires an in-depth understanding of the workings of the unit, relevant strategies, and external industry trends and practices that may impact the unit.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10 years' experience in oceanography.
  • Programming skills required.
  • Experience with end-to-end processing and QA/QC of data from Slocum underwater gliders is required.
  • Experience with data infrastructures are a plus.
  • Research experience in the fields of fisheries and wildlife ecology and physical-biological ocean coupling are highly sought.
Equipment Utilized
  • Will regularly use environments composed of multiple servers, storage and network systems.
  • Working knowledge in Python, Shell Scripting, MATLAB and R and ability to read and analyze big data in various formats and from various sources and sensors is required.
  • Should be familiar with hardware including Slocum gliders and the associated instruments (CTD, Optode, Ecopuck, ADCP, AZFP, pH Sensor, etc.), and Codar HF-Radar.
