Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Associate Director of Veterinary Services for the Core Services - Animal Care department. As part of the Office for Research, and reporting to the Director of Veterinary Services, develops, implements and maintains animal care standards and policies to maximize University research and teaching programs across a wide range of disciplines.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Maintains animal care facilities and programs in accordance with public policy and accreditation standards.
  • Provides advice and counsel to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Oversees clinical care and preventive health management of research and teaching animals and Laboratory Animal Medicine (LAM) Residency Program and the RU CMR global training program across campuses.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (or VMD) from an accredited veterinary school or equivalent certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates.
  • Minimum of five years of laboratory animal research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Veterinary license in at least one state within the USA.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal medicine (ACLAM) or European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM).
  • Ability to obtain Federal DEA and New Jersey Controlled Dangerous Substance licenses within six months of hire.
  • Must communicate well in English and have excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Must have broad knowledge of all aspects of laboratory animal medicine within a university or industrial setting.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work tactfully with a wide range of people.
  • Must have full range of body movement.
  • Must have correctable vision so as to observe animals for signs of illness and evaluate animal rooms and equipment for compliance with applicable standards.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-placement medical evaluation, including a medical history review and physical examination.
  • Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers.
  • In compliance with federal regulations, must undergo a criminal background check to work with controlled substances.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research credentials either MS or PhD.
  • USDA Accredited Veterinarian.
Equipment Utilized
  • Needs to have familiarity with all equipment used in animal housing, animal maintenance (feeding, watering, and breeding), sanitation of caging and rooms, and environmental monitoring, to develop Standard Operating Procedures, and be able to train staff in their correct use and maintenance. Equipment includes cage washers, bottlewashers, autoclaves, large dry heat sterilizers, laminar flow cage change stations, Microisolator and standard caging, ventilated housing racks.
  • Surgical equipment - anesthesia machines, physiological monitors
  • Diagnostic equipment - microscopes, centrifuges
  • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office and custom animal care and use management software and other critical software programs such as electronic IACUC systems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs when handling or assisting with the veterinary care of animals.
  • The position requires the employee to walk and stand for extended periods while conducting inspections of animal facilities and laboratories.
  • Must have a full range of body movement.
  • Must have vision correctable to a level that allows the observation of animals for signs of illness and the assessment of animal rooms and equipment for compliance with applicable standards.
