Craven County Government Volunteer Services Coordinator - Hospice (10510) in New Bern, North Carolina

  • The ability to establish rapport and work effectively with a variety of program disciplines and community organizations in order to establish a strong pool of volunteers and to grow Hospice referrals.

Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to function as the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator which includes the recruitment, training and assignment to volunteer activities for trained volunteers to help meet the needs of patients and families as requested by the patient or family.

Essential Functions

50%Volunteer Program Coordination

  • Oversees and coordinates all volunteer activities; recruits, orients and assigns volunteers to patient/families after reviewing the patient's chart prior to volunteer initial visit and confers with RN and social worker regarding need before and after initial volunteer/patient contact. Reviews and files volunteer sheets/service narratives and directs course of action for ongoing collaboration with the Hospice IDG.
  • Plan, prepare, and initiate volunteer training as needed. Coordinate speaker selection, scheduling, establishment of meeting places, publicity, refreshments, and preparation of all handouts and audio- visual supplies for each session. Teach sessions regarding volunteer responsibilities. Prepare list of attendees and record attendance
  • Responsible for the recruitment, screening, supervision, and evaluation of volunteers. Prepare and maintain all volunteer service data (maintains personnel files on volunteers, prepares and keeps current volunteer requirements, continuing education/immunization, etc.)
  • Support volunteers with the provision of opportunities for individual and group meetings, in-service education, and recognition.
  • Attends all patient care conferences, interdisciplinary team meetings to assist in coordinating care of patient.
  • Maintains the Hospice scrapbook for documenting volunteer activities and serves as editor of Hospice Newsletter which is printed quarterly. This activity may be assigned to an appropriate Hospice Volunteer.

30%Hospice Outreach

  • Collaborate with the Hospice Director and the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team to develop a strategy to effectively provide Hospice Outreach to citizens in Craven County. This will be accomplished through creating strong relationships with the medical community in Craven County to promote the Hospice philosophy and the specific services provided by Craven County Hospice with the goal of receiving appropriate Hospice referrals. This position will promote Hospice through an organized approach by providing educational in-services within the community at places such as physician offices, skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, health fairs, churches, civic clubs, and other appropriate venues in Craven County.

15%Special Events Planning

  • Plans luncheon and in-service in April in observance of National Volunteer month and in November in observance of National Hospice month. Works with the Social Worker and Spiritual Care Coordinator to plan a Service of Remembrance memorial service for the families of patients who have died during the previous year and members of the community who have suffered grief and loss as well as coordinating the display of the Hospice Christmas Tree both at the memorial service and in a prominent location in the area.
  • Plans, coordinates, and promotes the annual Spring Breakfast for the Hospice Foundation, utilizing volunteers, staff and outside speakers as needed to insure a successful fund raiser.

5%Miscellaneous

  • Attend Conferences, volunteer workshops, and in-service education as time, budget and staffing allows.
  • In the event of a disaster, may be required o assist as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.
Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from a four-year college or university; or graduation from high school and four years of work in volunteer services enabling the applicant to acquire the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
