Craven County Schools School Nutrition Maintenance Technician in New Bern, North Carolina

Position: School Nutrition Maintenenace Technician Reports to: School Nutrition Warehouse Manager II Terms of Employment: 12 Months, Full Time Pay Grade: 63

Nature of Work

Employee will perform maintenance tasks for the School Nutrition Department within Craven County Schools. Duties involve performing preventative maintenance functions, equipment repairs and installations, assembling devices and installing food service equipment components. Work requires lifting and moving equipment and food/supplies where needed, purchasing supplies, maintaining inventories and completing assigned paperwork and reports. Employee will work independently within 23 schools comprising Craven County Schools.

Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school; Associate's Degree in a related field preferred
  • Experience with food service equipment maintenance and repair
Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable):
  • EPA Section 608 Certification (refrigerants)
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
  • Performs kitchen maintenance such as cleaning or changing filters or light bulbs, sharpening knives, lubricating parts, repairing can openers, replacing wheels and gaskets, hanging racks or bulletin boards, caulking, doing touch-up paint or painting equipment; performs other School Nutrition tasks as needed.
  • Reviews repair requests, exercises considerable judgment in determining materials and corrective action needed and plans work schedule to complete tasks; forwards repair requests that require additional expertise or manpower to School Nutrition Warehouse Manager II.
  • Assembles, installs, maintains, and repairs school nutrition equipment such as ovens, braising pans, refrigerators, freezers, slicers, steamers, fryers, walk-in freezers and coolers, dishwashers, water heaters, serving lines, ice machines repair/cleaning or components of food service equipment; follows schematic diagrams and written instructions and uses specialized devices and other associated equipment as needed.
  • Assists School Nutrition Warehouse Manager II in assessing school food service facility needs and causes of equipment problems; assists in identifying and applying appropriate corrective action.
  • Assists School Nutrition Warehouse Manager II in developing school nutrition preventative maintenance plans; performs assigned preventative maintenance tasks as scheduled.
  • Request, maintains and is responsible for the inventory and accountability of material, tools, repair parts and equipment assigned and is issued for use.
  • Inventory all tools and equipment quarterly and submit results via the appropriate supervisor to the Director for consideration.
  • Employee may be on call outside normal work hours if an emergency requires site reviews, the repair of equipment, the transfer or disposal of food or supplies or other tasks.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of food service mechanical repairs.
  • Knowledge of mechanical tools, diagnostic tools and utilities.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of standard kitchen tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams and maintenance documentation.
  • Ability to systematically determine the source of problems and to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Employee must have high service orientation with good follow-through and personal time management skills.
Physical Requirements

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to this job classification. Work in this classification is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 150 pounds of force occasionally and up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

  • Walk, lif , reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel and crouch
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment tools
  • Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • Observe general surroundings and activities
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
  • Use communication by means of spoken and written words to express or exchange ideas
  • Read work orders, logs, diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, trade journals, and a variety of correspondence.
  • Ability to prepare reports, forms, system documentation, etc. using prescribed formats and using current software.
