APPROXIMATE ANNUAL SALARY - $91,496.16 to $137,954.16 PAY GRADE: 43

The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

The Position

DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Incumbents typically supervise subordinate law enforcement officers in an assigned division within the department. Incumbents may also be assigned to administrative duties including, but not limited to, Pre-release, Interstate Compact, Fugitive Apprehension, Field Operations, Planning and Research, and Support Services. Supervisory duties include developing work performance standards; evaluating employee performance; identifying training needs and providing guidance; scheduling; work assignment and review; reviewing records, reports, and statistics for conformance to established policies, procedures, regulations, and formats; and initiating or implementing counseling and discipline as required. Assignments at this level vary widely, depending upon the division to which assigned.

Assignments at this level vary widely, depending upon the division to which they are assigned. This is a Statewide Departmental recruitment for Sergeant vacancies in all Divisions. This is the department's annual recruitment and is only open to current classified employees in state service with at least six months of continuous, full-time equivalent service who currently work at the Department of Public Safety. IMPORTANT: DPS Sergeant written exams will be scheduled in Carson City on March 18th at 1:00pm and March 25th at 9:00am at 555 Wright Wy. (Training Room) and in Las Vegas on March 20th at 9:00am and March 25th at 1:00pm at 215 E. Bonanza Rd. (Campos Building). Everyone must select a test date and will be required to confirm your attendance with an email reply. (There will be no makeup dates). Senate Bill 431 was passed in the 2023 legislative session removing the Training and Experience (T&E's). There is no longer a ranked list

To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

Certification as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and two years of law enforcement experience as a Category I Peace Officer, two years which were equivalent to a DPS Officer II in Nevada State service; OR two years of experience as a DPS Officer II in Nevada State service.

Special Notes

Applicant must meet and maintain current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. DPS Sergeants and DPS Officer II's, as a condition of continuing employment with the State Fire Marshal's Office, must successfully complete the National Fire Academy's Arson Investigation course (R205) or an approved equivalent course within one year of appointment.

Special Requirements

This position is subject to call-out or call-back. Statewide travel is required. Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.

1) Do you have any of the following: Completion of a Category I Peace Officer Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and three years of law enforcement experience, two years of which were at the journey level; OR two years of experience as a DPS Officer II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience? Please describe where you obtained your experience.

2) Do you have a college degree in criminal justice, organizational management, business administration/management, public administration, or related field? You must attach a copy of your diploma.

3) Do you have current POST certificates in any of the following: Intermediate, Advanced, Firs Line supervisor or equivalent? You must attach copies to your application.

4) Describe your law enforcement experience, including the number of years, in the following areas: a) Highway Patrol b) Investigations c) Parole and Probation d) Training Division e) Fire Marshal f) Capitol Police g) Other POST Category 1 Peace Officer level experience.

5) Do you have any of the following Professional Development Certificates or training: public Safety Field Training Officer (PTSO), DPS Instructor Certification, Defensive Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC), Firearms, Crash Investigations, RADAR, NRAS, OTIC, EPICS, or course certificates focused on similar POST Professional Development coursework in all Divisions? Program should be certified by the agency providing the instruction and the applicant must have trained in that focus area within the last three years. Applicants must submit supporting documentation.

6) Describe your experience, including the number of years (start and end dates), in any of the following specialized units/categories: Parole and Probation to include Sex Offender Unit, Interstate Compact (ISU), Task Force, Rural Operations, and/or House Arrest; Nevada Highway Patrol to include MERT, Motors, Task Force, Commercial and/or ICE; Nevada Division of Investigations to include Major Crimes Unit and/or Task Force; Training Division, Corporal; and/or Fire Marshal, Investigator.

7) Are you a veteran, veteran with a service-connected disability, widow or widower of a person killed in the line of duty, widow or widower of a veteran, or member of the Nevada National Guard? You must attach the appropriate documentation to your application.
