U.S. Air Force - Agency Wide AIRCRAFT PNEUDRAULIC SYSTEMS MECHANIC in Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida

Summary The primary purpose of this position is: To inspect, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, and test TI, T6 aircraft fuel systems and components, both on and off aircraft. Responsibilities Inspects, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, and tests a variety of major aircraft fuel systems, their assemblies, and components on and off aircraft. Removes major components of aircraft structure or systems (e.g., control surfaces, fairing, access panels, doors, hatches, landing gear assemblies, engines, activator units, tubing, electrical wiring, control cables, etc.) to inspect, maintain, modify, analyze, troubleshoot, etc. Perform test, inspection, overhaul and repair of aircraft fuel components. Utilizes safety practices and procedures and controls tools. Accomplishes operational and. maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair. Performs flight line and ground handling operations. Establishes and maintains good working relationships. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8600, Engine Overhaul Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is is ability to do the work of a WG-8268 AIRCRAFT PNEUDRAULIC SYSTEMS MECHANIC more than normal without supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of, and ability and skill in applying, the fluids, electrical and mechanical policies, principles; practices, techniques, tools, instruments and equipment to analyze and evaluate problems (e.g. internal seals and leak rates of components, check all parts for critical dimensions, analyze the cause of failures), inspect, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, adjust/repair within required specifications, overhaul and testing of on-aircraft fuel systems, assemblies and components. Tools include, but not limited to, hand and power tools, jigs, fixtures, feeler gauges, micrometers, force indicators, dynamometers, voltmeters, torque wrenches, optical flat instruments, and combustible gas and oxygen alarm/analyzer. KSA must be gained on fuel systems, their assemblies and components, typically installed in fighter and/or trainer aircraft, e.g., T-1, T-6. One-year experience in the last three in a high tempo environment is highly desirable. 2. Knowledge of, and ability and skill in applying, aircraft mechanic techniques sufficient gain access to on-aircraft fuel systems, assemblies and components in order to make repairs, e.g., tow aircraft, disconnect flight control cables, disconnect and reconnect electrical wiring using splices, remove and replace access panels, etc. 3. Skill and ability to read and interpret technical orders, microfilm, manufacturers' specification manuals, parts supply books, blueprints and schematic diagrams. 4. Knowledge of, and ability to maintain, manual and automated records and documentation. Ability to input and extract data using a keyboard (qualified typist not required). 5. Knowledge of towing characteristics of assigned aircraft, including ,landing gear, safety pin, wing locks, braking systems and tying-down grounding methods; proper aircraft-tower radio operations and procedures. Knowledge, and skill and ability to apply, applicable safety policies and procedures associated with maintenance, repair and replacement of on-aircraft fuel systems, refueling and defueling aircraft, active and tarmac access/driving, etc. 6. Ability to work with others in a business-like manner. Physical Effort Performs work; which includes lifting, walking, bending, crouching, standing, and arm and /or hand movement Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. Must lift items weighing up to 60 pounds or heavier items with the assistance helpers or mechanical lifting devices. Position requires incumbent to be able to enter confined spaces with access openings of approximately 247 square inches (19" X 13" is the average opening size). Job may also require standing in one place for extended periods of time. Subject to high intensity and higher frequency sounds, that imposes a physical burden. Cannot be Red/Green color blind. Working Conditions Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Exposed to toxic fumes, dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, fuel, and hydraulic fluids. Employee is in danger of injury by: fluids subject to high pressures (1,000-3,000 pounds per square inch); falling from aircraft, work stands, or slips on oily floors; falling objects, or cockpits containing explosive devices; cuts, shocks, strains, or skin and eye irritations; and high intensity and higher frequency sound waves. Possibility of physical damage caused by inhalation and prolonged exposure to JP-8 fuel, chemicals, flammable, volatile and toxic chemicals both in liquid and vapor form. Required to wear full-face air supplied or half face respirators for extended periods of time. Subject to work in excessive heat, cold, noise, electrical energy and slippery or uneven walking services. Works around machinery with moving parts, and aircraft running engines. Incumbent is required to take a physical exam prior to starting work and an annual exam thereafter for detection of possible skin irritations, burns, lead poisoning, liver damage, respiratory disorders, heat stress disorders and hearing problems. Subject to hazardous noise while working on the flight line. Further, there is a known correlation to aircraft fuels and Benzene, which has been identified as a carcinogen. Incumbent must not be claustrophobic because of the requirement to enter confined spaces. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
