REPORTS TO:                               PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

SALARY RANGE:                           $17.00 per hour

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: To provide technical knowledge, supervision and coordination of highway/street maintenance activities within the City of Natchez.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILTY: Under the administrative direction of the Director of Public Works, the Highway & Street Supervisor will be responsible for planning, assigning and supervising the work of street and operational maintenance personnel with a view towards maximum utilization of personnel at a minimum cost. The Supervisor will plan and supervise activities subject to the general direction of the Director of Public Works.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Supervises operation of division.

•Planning and Coordinating daily maintenance activities in the highway/street division.

•Assists crews with daily activities as personnel needs arise.

•Inspects equipment for proper operating conditions and maintenance needs.

•Provides technical and logistical solutions and/or advice to the Director of Public Works.

•Assists in the development & training for staff safety programs.

•Prepares recommendations for the replacement of equipment.

•Assists in the preparation and execution of operating & capital budgets for the highway/street division.

•Makes work assignments and checks on progress /completion.

•Instructs personnel in work methods.

•Establishes work priorities and sees that assignments are carried out accordingly.

OTHER DUTIES:

•Performs other related work as assigned by Director

•Handles complaints from the public

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school and extensive experience in public works activities to which assigned; or graduation from a four-year college or university or recognized standing with major course work in civil engineering and experience in public works activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Considerable knowledge of modern principles and practices of public works administration.

• Considerable knowledge of highway/street infrastructure maintenance.

• Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in highway/street maintenance and construction.

• Considerable knowledge of the types of equipment & materials required to perform related work.

• Ability to plan and supervise activities in a coordinated manner.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with subordinates.

• Initiative and resourcefulness in handling maintenance problems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk to hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb of balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl, and smell.

2. The employees must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally lift and or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vison, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
