Job Summary:
JOB SUMMARY
Provides written translation for inpatient and outpatient care areas that serve patients with Limited English Proficiency., including but not limited to documents such as evaluation reports, discharge instructions, patient education materials, consents, forms, medical records and marketing materials. If also a certified medical interpreter (CMI) or certified healthcare interpreter (CHI), may also provide remote (video or phone) or onsite interpretation as needed or required by the department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Serves as staff translator (written communication), converting the written word from one language to another, ensuring that the original meaning and formatting of the document is retained, including entering translation projects into memory software as deemed appropriate by Vanderbilt Interpreter Services.
• Seeks and obtains continuing education and ongoing professional development as defined by ATA Certified Translator (CT) certification (required for this position) and Vanderbilt Interpreter Services.
• Communicates and coordinates with the Program Coordinator (translation project manager) and other staff members (proofreaders) effectively and professionally regarding project details, deadlines, terminology and other pertinent information to provide the highest quality translation product.
• Provides assistance and information to Vanderbilt Interpreter Services regarding industry trends, latest translation techniques and terminology, including updating glossaries maintained by department for departmental use and consulting outside resources as necessary.
• Contributes to the organization by actively participating in process improvement initiatives and shared decision making.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
• Listening (Advanced): Demonstrates excellence in listening and often requested by others to summarize and interpret what transpired at meetings and during conversations. Demonstrates reflective listening by using phrases such as "Do I hear you saying.... or "It sounds like...." Perseveres until all key points are explained. Always gives speakers the feeling of comfort and interest, focusing intently on the subject. Formulates responses and draws conclusions only after speakers are finished.
• Language Translation (Advanced): Demonstrates the uppermost levels of expertise in language translation in challenging and complex situations. Displays the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, and interpretations. Often takes a lead role in highly pressurized situations when there is a need to achieve results. Consistently delivers translation results in a creative and imaginative manner while setting a standard for others.
• Patient Rights (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate patient rights in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
