Vanderbilt University Community Service Officer - Campus in Nashville, Tennessee

Vanderbilt University Public Safety Department has openings for Community Service Officers. We have full-time positions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts. The Vanderbilt University Public Safety Department operates 24/7. Applicants must be able to work nights/weekends/holidays to ensure that adequate staffing can be maintained, and shift availability/need can be discussed if the department wishes to interview.

The Community Serviced Officer performs safety and security duties at Vanderbilt University, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Vanderbilt Health at One Hundred Oaks, and surrounding areas, including facilities, grounds, parking lots, and garages. This role performs general security/patrol and traffic mitigation duties, reports suspicious or hazardous situations, and proactively patrols on foot or in specified non-police vehicles to check for potential safety and security concerns. This position may staff security posts and enforce parking regulations.

General Information

  • 1st shift pay rate: $18.00/hr

  • 2nd shift pay rate: $19.50/hr which includes a shift differential

  • 3rd shift pay rate: $19.75/ hr which includes a shift differential

  • There is occasional overtime required for this position.

  • This is an unarmed position.

  • Promotional opportunities after 12 months based on meeting eligibility requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Serve the community through proactive security post assignments or patrol functions including self-initiated activities.

  • Develop rapport with members of the university community as well as surrounding areas; participates in community relations activities.

  • Assist community members as necessary.

  • Respond to non-police emergency calls to include but not be limited to the following: alarms (fire, general security), hazardous material spills and leaks, and pedestrian or vehicular traffic control.

  • Use trained tactics to assist in controlling, de-escalating, or restraining combative and/or violent patients as requested by medical personnel.

  • May provide back-up and assistance for other officers within guidelines specified in department policy and procedures

  • Respond to general security or safety hazard calls for service as directed and maintains familiarity with personal protective equipment including protective suits and N-95 respirators.

  • Maintain knowledge of the Institutional Disaster Plan and the role of the Community Service Officer in the administration of the plan.

  • Provide appropriate internal and external disaster assistance according to Departmental, University, and Medical Center policies and procedures.

  • Provide walking escorts as necessary

  • May be assigned to investigate and write reports for non-criminal activities according to established procedures.

  • Provide security for events such as athletic, concerts, speakers, visiting dignitaries, commencement and numerous other social activities where security personnel may be required to provide crowd control and maintain order.

  • May assist with annual parking permit registration.

    Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

  • Vanderbilt University engages a third party to provide continuous up-to-date notifications regarding negative changes to motor vehicle records.

  • Completion of VUPS training within 30 days of hire is required*. This includes:

  • De-escalation, Pressure Point Control Tactics, Asp Baton, pepper spray, or similar training

  • CPR and AED certification

  • 18 years of age is required.

  • Security officer training

*Note: this training is completed within the first 2 weeks of training. In some cases, if someone missed a few days of training they must have it completed within 30 days.

Experience and Skills:

  • Ability to operate computerized equipment and a two-way radio is required.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills is required.

  • Excellent customer service skills is required.

Physical Requirements:

Community Service Officers must be able to:

  • Stand for long periods

  • Walk, climb, and lift

  • Meet written departmental standards on appearance/grooming

  • Pass a thorough background investigation that demonstrates –

  • Good moral character,

  • Good driving record, and

  • No prior criminal convictions that would prohibit the individual from meeting the standards set forth by the State of Tennessee to become certified under the Private Protective Services Act

  • Must obtain immunizations and medical tests as required to be able to work in patient care and high-risk areas.

Working Environment:

  • Required to work nights/weekends/holidays.

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather and various weather extremes.

  • May encounter such things as hazardous materials, infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, steam, car battery acid, loud noises, smoke, and fire.

  • Must be able to correctly use a TB Mask and other precautionary equipment.

  • May encounter physical danger from violent patients, suspects, and others.
