Job Title Student Lab Assistant WORK STUDY (Soil Lab)
General Description
This is a work-study student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of the Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Laboratory.
Job Duties
Registers samples submitted by the general public to the laboratory.
Prepares soil and plant samples for laboratory analyses.
Conducts the routine analyses of soil, plant, water, and other material.
Gathering laboratory results for generation of reports.
Operates laboratory equipment and conducts minor maintenance.
Maintains deposits of payments for laboratory services.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic knowledge of chemistry, geology, soil science, animal nutrition, and/or plant biology.
Ability to repeatedly conduct detailed laboratory tasks.
Ability to communicate professionally and courteously in both oral and written form with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to accurately prepare scientific records and files.
Ability to solve quantitative laboratory problems.
Ability to learn lab-specific software.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
Required Qualifications
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.
A student must be awarded and accept a “Work-Study Permit” for each semester the student will be working.

Laboratory experience
Physical Demands
The candidate must be physically fit to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time or do other physically demanding work.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
A student must be eligible for work study. Please check with the Financial Aid Office, if you are not sure whether you are eligible.
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
