Job Title Student Assistant (Camp Counselor)
General Description
This is a student position responsible for assisting SFA faculty and staff during the Conservation Careers Summer Camp. Camp counselors provide a safe and memorable experience for our campers. The counselor will be assigned to a maximum of 10 campers for the duration of their stay. The counselors will be required to stay at the dorms with the students attending the camp.
Forestry, Environmental Science, and Geospatial Science students will be able to use this week towards internship credit.
Job Duties
Assists and oversees camper activities.
Monitors and helps facilitate activities.
Supervises campers during meals.
Follows safety and emergency procedures and guidelines.
May perform administrative tasks (filing, record keeping, etc.) as needed.
Works one-on-one with campers.
Ensures camper safety at all times.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Skill in using computer and computer applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel).
Ability to strictly adhere to camp philosophy, standards, and goals.
Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor.
Ability to work effectively and patiently with campers and encourage them.
Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and manage time efficiently.
Ability to think and plan creatively and demonstrate innovation.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students and the general public.
Ability to work successfully as a member of a team.
Required Qualifications
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.
ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES MUST MAINTAIN A 2.5 GPA .
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge in the field of Forestry, Environmental Science, or Geospatial Science is preferred.
Previous camp counselor experience is preferred.
Physical Demands
Must be able to complete strenuous tasks in difficult conditions, including environmental. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
