BlackRock Director and Legal Head, Mumbai in Mumbai, India

About this role

BlackRock’s Legal & Compliance team in Asia Pacific (APAC) is seeking a Legal Head, Mumbai with primary responsibility to cover a global technology role and as a secondary, but no less important, responsibility to help us build out, manage and develop a team of technology and non-technology attorneys based in Mumbai to support BlackRock in APAC and, where appropriate, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. This role will also involve executing on projects designed to improve business impact, mitigate legal and regulatory risk, and enable BlackRock to best serve its clients in APAC. As the head lawyer in BlackRock’s Mumbai office, you will play a leadership role, acting as a senior culture carrier and local manager to more junior attorneys. You will also work closely with BlackRock’s APAC General Counsel, and other members of the regional Legal and Compliance team, on key departmental initiatives.

In terms of substantive experience, you should be a team leader with 12-15 years of experience in managing client-facing commercial technology negotiation teams as a “player-coach”. The ideal candidate will have day to day responsibility for leading the drafting, reviewing and negotiating of complex service agreements for the provision of financial technology systems, tools and services to BlackRock’s clients, typically without outside counsel support. As a senior member of the global Digital Enterprise Legal team, you will provide legal and business guidance on strategic, regulatory, contractual and operating matters to BlackRock’s Aladdin, Aladdin Wealth and eFront client technology businesses in APAC and, potentially, Europe, as well as BlackRock’s technology-driven strategies in India, such as the Jio-BlackRock joint venture. BlackRock’s technology clients include banks, insurance companies, official institutions, sovereign wealth funds, corporate treasuries, asset managers, wealth managers, and other investment management entities.

This role will dual-report into senior L&C team leaders in APAC and New York.

Skillsets required:

  • Proven track record in analyzing, presenting and advising business leaders and management teams on technology, local regulatory, corporate and business law issues.

  • Experience negotiating complex agreements for the provision of enterprise investment systems and financial risk and wealth management and other analytics tools and associated services, without outside counsel support.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, develop talent and motivate team members.

  • Experience in supporting enterprise business requirements, including corporate acquisitions, strategic partnerships and vendor relationships, as applicable.

  • Experience working in a global, fast-paced and business-oriented environment.

  • Strong commercial judgment, analytical abilities and communication skills.

Requirements:

  • Recognized India law degreeand admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law in India, with a minimum of 12 years of experience, preferably partnership experience at a major international or India law firm (secondment experience a plus) or in-house within a large global financial services or technology company.

  • Background in technology contracts negotiation and commercial technology transactions, preferably with experience in financial technology, cloud computing and/or SaaS agreements, market data and intellectual property related matters, data privacy and/or technology outsourcings and related regulatory considerations.

  • Ability to learn and understand complex technical service offerings and requirements and apply knowledge in negotiation of service contracts.

  • Ability to learn business requirements quickly, analyze legal and commercial risks and propose creative, business-oriented solutions.

  • Ability to independently manage a varied and broad portfolio of client transactions effectively, demonstrating strong judgment and skills in time management and prioritization.

  • Ability to interact directly with senior internal business stakeholders and subject matter experts to address the needs of a growing global business in a thoughtful and practical manner.

  • Please highlight any experience working for international clients or international work experience, particularly Europe.
