Job Summary

Performs diagnostic Imaging examinations, (X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI, OR Nuclear Medicine), under the direct supervision of a registered Imaging technologist.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collects Pertinent data about the patient and procedure

  • Reconfirms patient's identification and verifies the physician's order.

  • Reviews the patient's chart and/or the physician's order to determine the optimal imaging procedure for suspected pathology

  • Verifies the patient's pregnancy status when appropriate.

  • Provides information to the patient about the procedure

  • Verifies the patient has consented to the procedure and answers any questions.

  • Provides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and a at a level the patient can understand

  • Instructs patient regarding preparation prior to imaging procedures including allergic reactions.

  • Analyzes the information obtained during assessment phase and determines optimal imaging parameters per diagnosis

  • Determines whether patient has been appropriately prepared for procedure.

  • Assesses factors that may contraindicate procedure such as medications or insufficient patient preparation.

  • Selects appropriate shielding and immobilization devices.

  • Administers contrast agents according to established guidelines (if applicable)

  • Obtains written consent prior to IV contrast administration.

  • Evaluates lab values prior to administering contrast agents.

  • Determines appropriate type and dose of contrast agent to be administered.

  • Monitors patient during exam for adverse reaction to contrast media.

  • Completes all necessary forms

  • Obtains optimum images during exam/procedure

  • Sets/adjusts radiographic equipment.

  • Positions patients to obtain diagnostic images per established protocols.

  • Utilizes CR equipment to maximize image quality.

  • Sends images to PACS for interpretation by radiologist.

  • Archives images to CD's as needed.

  • Documents information about patient care, exam, and patient history in appropriate record.

  • Verifies correct order is entered into RIS/HIS

  • Documents appropriate patient history into PACS system.

  • Documents any exceptions from the established guidelines.

  • Scans appropriate documents into PACS system

  • Completes all necessary forms

  • Facilitates correspondence with all departments to assure procedures are done in a timely manner.

  • Works with Centralized Scheduling, nursing units, and ER to accommodate STAT or ASAP orders.

  • Coordinates patient care with other departments within Imaging/radiology

  • Maintains equipment and work station in optimum condition

  • Performs daily QC on radiographic equipment.

  • Assure adequate patient care and office supplies are maintained.

  • Implements downtime procedures when necessary.

  • Coordinates rescheduling of patients during equipment downtime.

  • Initiates established downtime procedures during HIS/RIS and PACS downtime.

  • Attends monthly department meetings or reviews meeting minutes.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, or Higher Level of Education.

  • Must be enrolled in and have completed one year of an accredited Diagnostic Imaging, (Radiology, Ultrasound, MRI, Nuclear Medicine) program. Must pass ARRT certification exam for Radiologic Technologist within one year of completion of accredited Diagnostic Imaging program.

  • Must be approved via competency prior to performing procedure.

  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

  • Medical Terminology

  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to work independently and in a team setting; creativity in treatment in various settings including inpatient, skilled nursing and outpatient clinics; ability to transition smoothly between various treatment settings; flexibility in scheduling.

  • Independent thinking and decision-making ability.

  • Proficient oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.

  • Basic working knowledge of computers and office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • No preferred qualifications.

License, Certification & Clearances

  • Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

  • Current CPR (BLS)

  • Must pass ARRT certification exam for Radiologic Technologist within one year of completion of accredited Diagnostic Imaging program.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).

  • Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
