Position Summary:
An Academic Advisor manages a case load of students with a goal of providing comprehensive support for their academic performance, goals, and timely completion of their degree. An Advisor is responsible for assisting students with advising on majors, career exploration and development of academic planning strategies. Utilizing technology and other resources, Academic Advisors work directly with students on course sequencing, success skills and habits and provide guidance that assist with progression toward degree completion. Advisors engage with new students and supporters through new student orientation and support college transition and student success.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree. One year of higher education experience working with students. Knowledge of college student development and research on retention and persistence. Evidence of working with and responding to the needs of a diverse student population. Ability to professionally represent the university to diverse constituencies. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, build rapport and project a positive attitude. Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of current and best practices related to college student retention, academic success coaching, and academic advising. Working knowledge of computer applications. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality. Willingness to work evening and weekends as needed. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree. Experience advising/coaching college students, teaching, and understanding of higher education administration. Experience using retention data and customer relationship management software solutions. Working knowledge of university curriculum, academic programs, policies, and procedures. Experience with development of outreach campaigns.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides direct and ongoing academic support for an assigned student caseload to facilitate retention and timely graduation. Develops rapport with students and focuses on college transition and academic success. Creates a learning environment focused on strategies to achieve academic success. Collaborates with faculty to assist students as they explore majors and career plans consistent with their academic interests and abilities. Advises students on degree planning, career options and success strategies; assist students with meeting academic progression benchmarks. Develops technical skills needed for efficient and effective academic advising (class registration, course planning, general education, general financial aid knowledge as it relates to Satisfactory Academic Progress and a customer relationship management system). Maintains regular communication with assigned students and provide retention feedback to the university regarding student persistence and progress to degree completion. Serves as a first-year advisor at freshman and transfer student orientation and support student recruitment and enrollment related events. Develops evidence-based, best-practice educational sessions for students. Assists with program evaluation and assessment, providing recommendations to enhance communication and the development of strategic initiatives. Provides direct outreach for students experiencing academic difficulty by monitoring early alerts and utilizing university resources customized to individual student needs. Refers students in need of assistance to appropriate campus resources. Works with college faculty and staff to develop, deliver, and evaluate effective retention efforts.
