Atlantic Health System Transcriptionist, ACL Full Time in Morristown, New Jersey

Under the direction of the Laboratory Operations Manager and Pathology Supervisor, the Transcriptionist performs a variety of tasks in support of Pathologists, and other allied healthcare providers. Accountable for ensuring accuracy and completeness of all documents, tests ordered and patient case reports; which allows the Pathologists to focus on patient care.

Essential Functions

The Pathology transcriptionist is responsible for transcribing and/or editing pathology dictation processed through speech recognition technology by physicians and other healthcare providers, as well as research and administrative documents, in order to document patient care while consistently ensuring accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Transcribing and/or editing Pathology dictation processed through speech recognition technology

  • Coordinating patient case correspondence materials for sending out for consultation

  • Ordering tests and stains for cases

  • Answering phones, and assisting callers with patient and pathology report requests, change of patient demographics, or providing related follow through.

Participation in process improvement, which includes data collection, coordinating case conference materials etc. Required to follow work unit standard operating procedures, along with reviewing and ensuring accuracy of procedures. Routinely serves as a resource and mentor to others by training, educating and mentoring both new and existing members of the work unit, and trouble-shooting and resolving problems as appropriate.

  • Coordinate the send out of blocks and slides for consultation

  • Prepares reports and slides for use during tumor conferences.

  • Scanning and filing patient reports and results from consults and reference laboratories

Additional duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned duties accurately, efficiently and effectively in a timely manner. Actively seek out other assignments when daily tasks are completed.

  • Respond to telephone calls for patient/pathology reports

  • Distribute supplies

  • Contact physician’s offices or nursing staff for additional info concerning incomplete requisitions.

  • Fill out paperwork for QA.

  • Maintain QA/QC charts in laboratory area. Stock supplies such as gloves, containers, cassettes, etc. Continue to keep all areas stocked. Distribute and store supplies when they arrive.

Education/Training:

High School diploma/GED required

Formal medical transcribing training preferred.

Associate’s degree preferred

Experience:

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Required Minimum Experience:

Six months transcription experience in medical setting required, with Pathology experience highly preferred.

Knowledge of Pathology Information System billing, and Tumor Conference preparation (all genres). Pathologist’s Peer Review and CAP Anatomical Tumor Forms preferred as appropriate.

Required Minimum Skills:

Computer skills and medical terminology with Pathology specialty preferred.

Demonstrates initiative, proficiency and good judgment to optimize the use of other allied healthcare providers’ time. Highly organized, efficient, and multi-functional, with ability to work independently, as well as in a team.
