Purpose of the Position: TRIO Student Support Services, a U.S. Department of Education supported project, promotes access, equal opportunity, and success for students who are first-generation in college, students from low-income households, and students who have disabilities. The assistant director serves in a leadership role, working collaboratively with academic and student affairs colleagues to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where SSS eligible students thrive. Project components include academic support, financial wellness/literacy education, FAFSA assistance, career and graduate school exploration, and cohort-building programming. The position reports to the TRIO Student Support Services director. The position also collaborates with the McNair Scholars project, serving as a bridge and coordination partner, leveraging the impact of the projects and assisting with recruitment pathways to bolster the number of first-generation, low-income students and students from historically underrepresented populations pursuing and completing doctoral degrees. This position is also available as a Success Coach/Coordinator (Student Services Professional 2 Student Advocacy & Support, 8462ED). The position is supported by U.S. Department of Education funds funded through August 31, 2025; UMN Morris intends to apply for future SSS and McNair projects. Job duties Teaching, Advising and Student Support (50%) Coordinate TRIO SSS First Year Experience programming Teach college transition and success courses (e.g. Morris 1101) using TRIO SSS framework and best practices for low income, first generation students, and students with disabilities Provide mentoring, coaching, guidance, and referrals for first year and upper-level project participants (estimate caseload is 60 to 70 students) Serve as an Academic Recovery coach for project participants Work within the student affairs and campus life response team protocols to provide academic alert, CARE report, and critical incident management support: assess severity of situation; consult with relevant offices; ensure good reporting and communication Monitor student academic progress reports at key academic markers; communicate with students, CARE team, and others to foster students' academic and career success, address concerns, and maintain a coordinated approach Work closely with faculty and staff to effectively deliver advising and support services Log student contacts, academic success plans, referrals, and follow-up communications; maintain student records Program Management, Development, and Assessment (25%) Assist with the planning and implementation of the project plan of operation Lead planning and implementation for participant recruitment, selection, and first year success Work with the project director to create, administer, and analyze utilization data, surveys, focus groups, and other forms of assessment to evaluate and enhance project effectiveness Assist with database management and annual performance report processes Assist with financial systems and budget management Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and university regulations and policies, specifically TRIO SSS legislation and regulations Work collaboratively with project partners to advance the project goals and objectives; lead financial triage and TRIO SSS Grant Aid processes Assist with peer mentor training and supervision Engage in scholarly, leadership, professional development, and/or creative activities with a focus on effectively supporting TRIO SSS eligible students Participate in state, regional, and national TRIO and similar conferences and meetings and campus governance for professional development and enhanced collaboration TRIO McNair Scholars (25%) Serve as a bridge and coordinat on partner, leveraging the impact of the SSS and McNair projects Assist with McNair recruitment pathways with SSS and Native American Student Success Assist with development and coordination of events and workshops Coordinate McNair ambassador programming and activities Provide administrative and programmatic support, including outreach campaigns Qualifications Essential qualifications (appointment level and work duties will reflect qualifications): Bachelor's degree and four years of experience or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience Training in educational success and retention strategies for historically underserved populations Knowledge of educational opportunity programs Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse student populations and the ability to contribute to the University's commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning environment Preferred qualifications: Master's degree (required for teaching duties) Professional experience working in a higher education setting Knowledge of first year experience programming Professional experience advising/coaching/mentoring college students Professional and/or student experience in a Student Support Services or other TRIO programs Professional experience working with American Indian students, students of color, and/or students from rural areas Background that includes overcoming barriers similar to those of participants Benefits Working at the University At the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
