The successful candidate will conduct high impact research focused on porous and fractured media flow mechanics, utilizing non-destructive analyses, and geologic core characterization. Methods including computed tomography scanning, flow-through experiments under in-situ subsurface conditions, and traditional dry core evaluation tools currently employed at NETL will be used.

Porous and Fractured Media Flow Mechanics – Develop and implement experimental plans related to various flow systems meant to recreate subsurface reservoir conditions relevant to energy production and geologic carbon management.

Computed Tomography Analyses – Utilize data from multiple computed tomography (CT) scanners at NETL’s Geo-imaging Characterization lab.

Geologic Core Characterization – Utilize core logger, XRF, core flow systems, and other analytical equipment to evaluate geologic core for carbon management and critical mineral identification scenarios.

What this opportunity supporting NETL uniquely provides you:

  • Working on applied, cutting-edge projects with global impact while being mentored by, and collaborating with, the nation’s leading energy scientists and engineers.

  • Real-world experience supplemented with technical development and discussions that provide unique insight into the broad range of mission-critical engineering and scientific disciplines NETL leverages to support national energy research and policy development.
