THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is currently looking to hire an Engineering Technician. This position is part of a comprehensive 12-month training initiative aimed at equipping participants with a wide-ranging understanding of the various roles and responsibilities typically associated with the Engineering Technician profession. Through hands-on learning experiences in key engineering domains such as Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Highway Safety and Traffic, the selected candidate will gain valuable insights and skills that will pave the way for a successful transition into a permanent role within the District. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, the employee will engage in a range of entry-level technical tasks across all aspects of PennDOT, encompassing design, construction, and maintenance activities. The individual will provide engineering support to various PENNDOT units while cultivating a foundational understanding of departmental policies, procedures, organizational roles, and workflow dynamics.

The training program includes a series of scheduled rotational assignments within Engineering Districts, allowing employees to become acquainted with district personnel and operational procedures, as well as to actively contribute to work projects aimed at fulfilling the overall training objectives. Additionally, employees will attend classroom training sessions as outlined by the program coordinator, with further details available in the attached ET Training Manual.

All work assignments will undergo thorough scrutiny before being allocated, and will be meticulously reviewed for completeness, technical precision, and the validity of the approach both during the process and upon completion.

Upon successful completion of the training program, final job placement will be in the Construction Unit.

*Work Schedule and Additional Information:*

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • *Telework: *You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time ad-hoc after successful completion of probationary period and training. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville.
  • *Salary: *In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology. 
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 9 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
