Responsibilities Prepare and update guides, standards, instructions, operating procedures, and/or policies, reports, and other substantive documentation for high risk activities. Respond to accidents, exposures, and other emergencies. Provide emergency support, advice on remedial action, and strategies for preventing and/or intervening in emergency situations. Perform site visits and/or inspect off-site facilities to ensure compliance. Prepare report of findings and recommendations. Serve as a senior specialist and plan, develop, coordinate, promote, and implement a comprehensive health and safety program for high risk activities. Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations and guidelines. Research, assess, investigate, analyze, and evaluate health and safety literature, records, activities, and strategies to ensure compliance and to provide guidance, consultation, and recommendations on prevention and intervention. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, GS-0018 position, at the GS-11 level you must have: A. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing inspections of conventional work operations and activities where equipment, working conditions, and materials are potentially hazardous and recording apparent violations; recommending possible courses of action to control or eliminate hazards detected; providing instruction to employees covering standard safety and occupational health subjects; OR B. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., in a safety or occupational health field (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; OR C. a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. In order to qualify for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, GS-0018 position, at the GS-12 level You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing specialized safety and occupational health training courses to employees; scheduling surveys of facilities to identify and evaluate the safety and occupational health risk potential; investigating accidents including analyzing precipitating factors and accident cause data and developing specific methods for prevention; participating in the development of new procedures to identify and control hazardous situations in the workplace.
