The Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits works closely with the Director to develop year-round activities programming, oversee Compass Sports shop & retail operations, the internal ski and snowboard rental operation, and Paintbox. This position will oversee the outdoor space including, but not limited to the Mountain Lawn, Backcast Lawn, Pool Deck and patio areas. This position will actively ideate and create experiences for our guests in a luxury resort environment. The ideal candidate will have the appropriate mix of resort experience, creativity, management accreditation, a strong business acumen, organizational skills, and the ability to improve upon and implement, new operational efficiencies. The Assistant Director will contribute to the budgetary, forecasting and P&L responsibilities, hiring and separation duties, as well as scheduling, coaching and culture setting strengths. This leadership position must embody a genuine warmth and spirit for hospitality, our guests, members, and our team members. Local knowledge is highly valued and the ability to learn and grow within the experience economy is a must.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Job Duties include but are not limited to:
Oversee several managers, supervisors, and a team of 10 or more
Take ownership of the Compass Sports, Recreation and Paintbox programs
Train team members to become skilled activities facilitators, guides and ski shop associates
Ability to balance immediate needs with higher level goals and initiatives
Interview, hire, train, coach and hold team members accountable
Develop and execute activities for groups, the holidays and changing seasons
Attend department head meetings and create cross-department synergies
Assist in the creation of new experience and revenue opportunities
Develop and create standard operating procedures and training programs
Knowledge of Big Sky and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Custer & Gallatin National Forest, Beaverhead National Forest (natural history of the area, local flora and fauna)
Respond to guest inquiries regarding programs, services, policies and procedures in a professional and timely manner
Attend to service recovery events with the utmost professionalism and grace
Other duties as assigned by Director of Outdoor Pursuits.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
College degree or strong experiential background
3 years of supervisory & managerial experience, preferably in a resort environment
Passion for recreation and the outdoors
Authentic team builder who can motivate team members and hold them accountable
Must be very organized and demonstrate a high level of personal responsibility
Ability to handle high pressure circumstances with a calm demeanor
Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with guests and vendors
Required to become CPR and First Aid certified
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekend, evenings, and holidays
Computer literate in Microsoft Office applications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work tasks are performed indoors and outdoors and in a variety of weather conditions, including very low and extreme temperatures. Position requires walking, hiking and a very mobile work environment. Must be able to stand and move around for up to 7 hours. Must be able to bend, squat and lift while fulfilling a variety of tasks. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. on a regular basis.
