Characteristics of the Job
Under general supervision, is responsible for enforcement of adopted codes & ordinances through the provision of information to the public, review of proposed plans & inspection of new & altered electrical installations. Work is of a technical nature with the inspector required to exercise independent judgment in the electrical field & one or more areas of construction expertise to protect the health & safety of humans & the environment through competent design, construction & installation practices.
Examples of Duties
Inspect & test installation & repair of electrical systems to enforce adherence to national codes; ensure that wiring is properly sized, that all services are inspected before power company connection, ensure that wiring is maintained in a safe condition.
Examine specifications, blueprints & plans of electrical installations; check such items as fuse size, fixtures & other wiring methods for compliance with codes, trade standards & ordinances.
Provide excellent customer service by working with builders, developers, architects, & engineers to find mutually beneficial solutions to building construction issues.
Promote the Citys economic well-being by finding mutually beneficial solutions to building construction issues which enable project completions.
Discuss wiring methods & installations with contractors, property owners & other interested parties; explain & interpret national codes, standards & ordinances.
Review permit lists for assigned inspection district to see that no illegal electrical work is being performed; review & authorize permits for electrical wiring.
Prepare daily, annual & other reports of inspections performed covering conditions found, actions taken & recommendations made for further action, as well as names of owners, builders & addresses of inspections, if possible.
Make monthly reports & all other reports as required.
Interpret & review codes, standards & departmental regulations recommending changes when needed.
Serve as secretary to boards concerned with electrical codes.
Train other inspectors in the electrical code, if needed.
Make periodic inspections with other departments; enforce related municipal codes.
Attend local & national seminars for continued education of electrical codes.
Other duties may be assigned.
Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent; must have passed an accredited electrical apprenticeship program & four years as journeyman in the field; significant experience, training and/or knowledge of at least one additional construction discipline; or any equivalent combination of training & experience which provides the required knowledge, skills & abilities.
Residency
AFSCME employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from the Citys Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of hire.
