Perform in the role of CAD Specialist at NASA’s Arc Jet Complex. Provide CAD Drafting services on major projects of considerable scope or complexity. Responsible for creating and reviewing complete drawing packages for large projects. Proficient with both AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Experience using

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) desired. Ability to read mechanical and electrical drawings and develop 2D fabrication drawings from 3D SolidWorks models with limited input from engineering. Emphasis is on mechanical drawings but candidate should be able to tackle simpler electrical drawings if needed. Ability to edit older pencil, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD drawings to produce new versions of old drawings. Familiarity with universal CAD formats such as STEP, IGES, Parasolid, DXF, etc. Ability to discuss drawings with fabrication shops and answer basic questions about drawing dimensions, tolerances, and fitment.. Ability to perform field measurements within the Arc Jet Complex and around other support equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position

Transportation of notebooks, drawings, forms, etc. required. Ability to hear normal conversation. One eye (minimum) correctable to 20/20. Ability to distinguish eight colors on basic panel displays.

Description of Work Environment

Work is accomplished in an office, control room, and in and around test facility buildings. Movement is required between these work areas. Collection of field measurements may involve working outdoors or in high noise areas.

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks

Office and control room equipment includes computers, calculators, electronic instruments, mechanical instruments, and miscellaneous precision measuring devices.

Criticality of Attendance

Normal working hours are 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM. A “compressed” schedule with 9 hour days and every other Friday off is available. Regular daily attendance is required to maintain team effectiveness.

Other Essential Functions

Must be able to obtain NASA badge and maintain access to the workplace facility.

The base salary range for this position is 74,200 - 94,200. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  1. Advanced knowledge and abilities with AutoCad, SolidWorks and 3D modeling. Requires certification of two (2) years training from a vocational school or (2) years college with courses relevant to drafting or engineering principles. Five (5) years of direct work experience with CAD and/or Solid Modeling, will be taken into consideration in lieu of 1 year of formal school training.

  2. Requires an advanced understanding of all drafting practices and procedures, plus the ability to perform and apply a variety of mathematical calculations and a thorough working knowledge of shop and field construction/assembly processes in the mechanical/structural, electrical, or architectural areas.

  3. Must demonstrate good leadership, organization, planning, and problem-solving capability. Exceptional communication skills are desired as regular communication with engineers, project managers, fabrication shops, and others will be expected.
