Job Description

AECOM is seeking a skilled Systems Design Director with expertise in passenger and freight rail to join our Transit & Rail Systems Team. This role offers the chance to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group to deliver impactful projects and advance industry standards.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leads the delivery of Systems Design projects for Canada working across all Systems design disciplines such as Communications, Electronic Security, Signaling & Train Control, Power Supply & Distribution and lifecycle stages.

  • Leads System Design & Integration, by overseeing the development, coordination, and integration of multidisciplinary system designs across rail & transit and other market sectors, ensuring seamless project execution.

  • Works with Business Line Leaders across Canada to grow the Systems Design business

  • Ensure system design principles and methodologies can be effectively applied across various market sectors beyond rail & transit, including commercial, aviation, mining, data centers, etc.

  • Project Management, Coordination & Collaboration, oversee project planning, resource allocation, and design execution while working closely with internal teams, clients, contractors, and external stakeholders to align design efforts with project goals and operational needs.

  • Ensuring that all Systems design submissions are delivered in compliance with project requirements and with the Client's policies and procedures.

  • Takes a leading role in the development and sharing of knowledge across the team and mentoring and developing team members, fostering technical growth and continuous learning.

  • Supports the development of processes and procedures for Systems design to facilitate high-quality cost-effective work.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.

  • Lead proposals and pursuits, develops bid cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts as well as schedules for projects.

  • Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline submission packages.

  • Performs quality control review and approval of technical content produced by the Systems design team.

  • Technical Leadership & Standards Compliance by ensuring designs adhere to industry standards, client requirements, and regulatory guidelines while promoting innovation and best practices.

  • Risk Management & Quality Assurance: Identify potential design risks early and implement quality control measures to mitigate issues, ensuring project success.

  • Perform as Lead Verifier for the discipline.

  • Conduct all necessary Systems Design analysis at all levels and activities required by Company standards, the customer and legislative bodies from Concept Design through to post-commissioning phases as part of the new Scoping Organization.

  • Lead the implementation, integration, and effective use of Revit and Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes within the team, ensuring best practices are followed to enhance design efficiency, collaboration, and project delivery.

  • Stay ahead of emerging design technologies and trends, integrating new tools and methodologies to maintain a competitive edge.

  • Develop and refine design workflows, leveraging automation and digital tools to improve efficiency and reduce rework.

Role purpose:

The Systems Design Director will lead all aspects of the Systems (Communications, Electronic Security, Signaling & Train Control, Power Supply & Distribution, etc.) design efforts across rail & transit and other market sectors across all project phases, such as the development of technical specifications, technical bid evaluations, test plans, technical documentation and drawing packages. The Systems Design Director will also provide support to the Systems Engineering and Assurance team, support to Project Management teams, procurement support, construction support, testing & commissioning support, client and stakeholder management (including vendors, partners, AHJ's, third parties), as well as various other Systems design responsibilities as required by projects.

Dimensions:

  • Delivering technical Systems design work packages for client review and acceptance.

  • Technical advice and support to Project Engineers, Project Managers, Systems Engineering and Assurance team, and others as needed.

  • Management of external 3rd party service provisions (agency or contract) in respect of Systems Design in support of various projects.

  • Supporting and liaising with all program and project teams, the external supply chain and other 3rd party stakeholders.

  • Direct report to Senior Management.

  • Multiple direct and indirect reports.

  • Value of programs typically CAD1-500m.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (electrical, electronics, etc.) + 10 years of relevant experience in Rail Systems Design for all Primary (and Sub­ system/Elements) systems,

  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering and Assurance according to ISO/IEC 15288 & 50126.

  • P Eng

  • 10+ years experience managing rail systems design projects

  • Driving License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15 years of experience managing multidiscipline team.

  • PMP

  • Cross-Sector Adaptability

  • Used to implement and work under the principles of following standards: IEEE 1220, ISO 15288 + 24748 + 29148: Systems Engineering Life Cycle processes & Requirements management; ISO 50163: Traction Power & Running simulation; NFPA 130: TVS - FLS – MEPF Stations & Tunnels; EN50126, IEC 62278 & 62267, MIL STD 882E, RAMS - Transit Safety Requirements & Certification

Additional Information

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $145,000.00 - $190,000.00.
