The Senior Manager, Product and Planning is a critical leadership role responsible for the overall strategy, execution, and performance of the product development program management function. This role provides strategic direction, oversees program execution, manages a team of Program Managers (including the Program Manager, Product & Planning), and ensures alignment between product development initiatives and overall business objectives. The Senior Manager will play a key role in capital allocation decisions, portfolio management, and driving continuous improvement across the product development lifecycle. This position requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, financial acumen, and a proven track record of success in managing complex product development programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the overall product development program management strategy, aligning with the company's overall business goals and market opportunities. This includes defining program management methodologies, processes, and best practices.

  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Program Managers, providing guidance, support, and performance management.

  • Portfolio Management : Oversee a portfolio of product development programs, ensuring effective prioritization, resource allocation, and alignment with strategic objectives. This includes conducting regular portfolio reviews, identifying dependencies, and managing risks across multiple programs.

  • Capital Allocation & Prioritization: Play a key role in the strategic allocation of capital resources across product development initiatives, ensuring that investments align with business priorities and maximize ROI. This includes developing and presenting financial proposals to senior management.

  • Performance Management & Reporting: Track key performance indicators (KPIs) across the product development portfolio, providing regular reports to senior management on program progress, budget performance, and ROI. Identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.

  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve program management processes, methodologies, and tools to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and ROI.

  • Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the organization, including executive leadership, product management, engineering, marketing, and finance.

  • Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate risks that could impact the success of product development programs. Develop and implement contingency plans.

  • Resource Allocation: Optimize the allocation of resources (human, financial, and technological) across the product development portfolio to maximize efficiency and ROI.

  • Mentorship & Development: Provide mentorship and guidance to Program Managers, fostering their professional development and growth.

Critical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field

  • 7 to 10+ years of experience in program management, preferably in enterprise, with large capital budgets, product development experience an asset, with a minimum of 5 years in a management or leadership role.

  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing large, complex product development programs, demonstrating strong financial acumen and capital management skills.

  • Deep understanding of product development lifecycles (e.g., Agile, Waterfall), capital budgeting processes, and portfolio management techniques.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on strategic thinking and financial analysis.

  • Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Jira, Asana) and financial modeling software (e.g., Excel, financial planning software).

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, managing competing priorities and resource constraints.

  • Strong understanding of financial management principles, including capital budgeting, ROI analysis, and cost-benefit analysis.
