Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Veterinary Technician to support the health and responsible use of animals in biomedical research at our research facility. The ideal candidate will work independently and interact effectively with animal husbandry, veterinary, and investigative staff, handling a variety of species including rodents, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, birds, production animals, and nonhuman primates.
Responsibilities
Provide veterinary care to animals in support of biomedical research, understanding research studies and protocols to ensure appropriate care while respecting study integrity.
Assess health conditions of patients using independent judgment and established Standards of Care.
Administer medications via oral, subcutaneous, intradermal, intramuscular, and intravenous routes.
Monitor ongoing treatments and health concerns through regular rounds.
Administer post-operative and emergency care as needed.
Prepare animal patients for, perform, and assist in various veterinary medical and surgical procedures, such as anesthesia prep, monitoring and recovery, dental procedures, wound management, and euthanasia.
Perform examinations, schedule and organize regular health screenings and vaccinations for multiple species.
Maintain accurate and timely records, including GLP and electronic records, animal intake, housing, and enrichment logs.
Review medical records regularly for accuracy and completeness.
Use and maintain complex veterinary equipment, including anesthesia machines, ventilators, infusion pumps, syringe pumps, stereotaxis, suction, warmers, and microscopes.
Maintain the pharmacy and equipment, including dispensing pharmaceuticals, filling prescriptions, ordering, stocking, and inventory management of pharmaceuticals and supplies.
Wrap and autoclave instrument packs, maintain cold trays, and ensure the pharmacy is neat and clean.
Obtain fluid or tissue samples, perform biopsies, process diagnostic samples in-house, and prepare for outside lab submission.
Work some weekends and holidays across various campus areas, with a veterinarian on call.
Comply with regulatory bodies (e.g., USDA, OLAW) and regulations (e.g., AWA/AWR, PHS Policy) related to the field.
Perform technical services for investigators, including anesthesia prep, monitoring and recovery, breeding colony management, ear punching, ear tagging, injections, sedation, euthanasia, and tissue harvesting.
Train departmental staff, laboratory staff, students, and interns, as well as investigators on proper techniques for injections, tissue collection, anesthesia, asepsis, safety, restraint, identification, assessment, euthanasia, and other techniques necessary for quality research results and animal welfare.
Prepare for and assist site directorship during regulatory site visits from AAALAC, USDA, IACUC, and other authorities.
Perform other clinical or technical duties as assigned by the manager.
Essential Skills
AAS in Veterinary Technology (CVT preferred), Animal Science, or related field.
2+ years of veterinary technician experience.
Experience monitoring anesthesia and pre/post-operative care.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Animal surgery experience.
Experience with blood draws and medication administration.
Knowledge in animal science, animal handling, zoology, recovery, animal research, and animal health.
Work Environment
Primarily working with small animals from 9:30am-6pm with rotating weekends. Candidates must be comfortable with preclinical research. Parking is available for a daily fee, and the facility is easily accessible via public transportation. The position involves working under the Vice President of Research, managing animal care for various research groups. The work schedule includes shifts from 6am-2:30pm and 9:30am-6pm, with the earlier shift focusing on rodents and the later shift involving a mix of species, including post-operative recovery and surgical monitoring. Consultants are eligible to participate in AALAS study sessions, with opportunities for promotion and shadowing veterinarians outside working hours. Benefits include holiday pay, PTO, and tuition reimbursement after conversion.
Pay Rate: $24-28/hr

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00
