Develop, optimize, and validate multiple biochemical assays to perform drug screening. Utilize those assays to screen compounds. Keep an accurate and detailed electronic laboratory notebook. Maintain an orderly research workspace and follow all University, Department, and Harki laboratory specific safety policies. Prepare reports of research results for presentation in group meetings and for dissemination in scholarly publications and grant applications. 40% Cellular assays with small molecules Perform cell culture (Biosafety Level 2) and biochemical assays (western blots, etc.) with cancer cell lines and small molecules to identify molecular targets and biological mechanisms of action for compounds prepared in the Harki laboratory. Utilize a variety of laboratory research equipment and techniques for these various assays. Keep an accurate and detailed electronic laboratory notebook. Maintain an orderly research workspace and follow all University, Department, and Harki laboratory specific safety policies. Prepare reports of research results for presentation in group meetings and for dissemination in scholarly publications. 10% Compound synthesis and characterization Assist in the chemical synthesis of small molecules in collaboration with Harki laboratory staff. Perform analytical chemistry characterization studies of small molecules to determine purity and composition (NMR, mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography). Utilize a variety of laboratory research equipment and techniques for these various tasks. Keep an accurate and detailed electronic laboratory notebook. Maintain an orderly research workspace and follow all University, Department, and Harki laboratory specific safety policies. Prepare reports of research results for presentation in group meetings and for dissemination in scholarly publications. 10% Group jobs Perform assigned group jobs. These may include: maintenance of laboratory equipment; supply ordering; general laboratory upkeep. Write SOP's for newly developed assays. Maintain cellular and biochemical resources for multiple group projects. Majority of the work is done in a laboratory setting on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
