This person wants to be part of a terrific team in a small department of dedicated research specialists. They also like to watch the crops grow and smell that clean air. Small plot research consists of duplicating the practices of commercial farming only on a much smaller scale; and at the same time incorporating and evaluating new practices or products. Daily activities will be in many ways like farming on a smaller scale. A plot can be two square feet and up to three-quarters of an acre. A Research Plot Technician is detail-oriented, motivated, takes pride in their work, and strives to see results. This person works hands-on with 16 different crops, operates, and maintains specialized equipment such as John Deere and Wintersteiger, and works with a group of individuals called the Research Support Group. The Research Support Group works together to plant, maintain, and collect data and will harvest 16 types of crops. Small plot research assists the University of Minnesota crop breeders in developing new varieties to help eradicate disease, or they may find that new bin buster every farmer has been looking for. Major Areas of Accountability (with percentages): Note: for a person to be considered for the position, they must show through their work experience how they meet each essential qualification in their application 1) 30 % Planning and preparation of field and greenhouse experiments including those activities unique to conducting research: plot layout, specialized tillage operations and fertilizer and pesticide applications, application of plot treatments, plot maintenance, and plot harvest. 2) 25 % General plot management and experiment site maintenance activities that include but are not restricted to the safe operations of tractors, mechanical equipment, and fertilizer and pesticide handling. 3) 20 % Record keeping that can include, but is not all inclusive of, observation notes and data collection, activity and inventory logs, and pesticide application records. Also maintain important records, monitor and maintain operating inventories of supplies, and place orders for plot supplies, fertilizer, pesticides, and equipment. 4) 10 % Sample collection and processing activities that can include plant and soil selection for sampling, specific collection protocols, weighing, drying, grinding, sub sampling, packaging, and sample shipment. 5) 10 % Participate in or lead the calibration of equipment necessary for the successful completion of research tasks. Equipment can include planters, sprayers, fertilizer applicators and scales. 6) 5% Participate in or lead in equipment and facilities maintenance, repair, and upkeep. Participate in working with production agriculture as needed. Qualifications Required Qualifications: 1. High school graduate or equivalent, and two years related education and/or experience. 2. Evidence of being observant and detail-oriented, following written and verbal instructions, and being willing to participate in a team atmosphere. 3. Evidence of servicing and maintaining agricultural equipment Preferred Qualifications: 1. Experience in mechanized agriculture and safe operation of motorized farm equipment, farm background, and farm experience 2. Abilit to obtain a Certified Pesticide Applicator License for applying herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc. 3. Knowledge/ability to maintain and repair farm equipment. 4. Evidence of being observant and detail-oriented, following written and verbal instructions, and being willing to participate in a team atmosphere. 5. Use of computer for basic word processing and data entry/analysis 6. Ability to drive a pick-up truck with a gooseneck trailer. Ability to load a trailer with a tractor or combine. About the Department The Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) in Crookston is one of 10 University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers throughout Minnesota.
