UMPhysicians Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician in Minneapolis, Minnesota

In 2011, The University of Minnesota opened a new, state-of-the-art, 227,000-square-foot pediatric facility. The University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital has capacity for 207 patients and includes a full-service pediatric emergency department. Our Emergency Department has been rapidly growing for the last several years, and currently treats over 23,000 children annually, including many high complexity and high acuity patients, with an overall admission rate of approximately 20%. As the region's premier pediatric teaching hospital, we enjoy full medical, surgical and trauma subspecialist coverage, and work with trainees from a number of superior medical, surgical and dental residency and fellowship programs. The University of Minnesota's Department of Pediatrics has over 250 faculty, a 100-year tradition of excellence in the medical care of children and in the enhancement of care through research and education. The MHealth Masonic Children's Hospital also houses some of the leading pediatric clinical programs in the country, including solid organ transplantation, blood and marrow transplants, cancer treatments and cardiovascular surgery. The Department offers internal grants and funds educational, translational and quality improvement projects. In addition, the Department offers all faculty educational topics for promotion and self-improvement. In addition, the School of Medicine and Department provide EDIC learning and teaching opportunities. Our Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine values and supports a broad range of academic activities. We excel at medical education and have been recognized by the University of Minnesota, Department of Pediatrics Residents as one of the best educational rotations. We are PALS instructors and leaders in resuscitation education through Simulation. We give didactic lectures each year through institutional and regional medical conferences, our PALS educational program, and within our Pediatric and Emergency Medicine residency programs. We are a growing program in clinical research which emphasizes Quality Initiatives and collaboration with a wide range of local and national partners. We care for ill- and injured-children and adolescents, with an emphasis on high complexity/acuity subspecialty medical and surgical patients resulting in an admission rate which approaches 20%. Overall, 9% of all our Emergency patients arrive by Emergency Medical Services. In addition, we manage Mental Health, patients with addiction and children of abuse. Division Highlights: PEM faculty comprised of physicians who have trained and worked all over the U.S. including Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Albuquerque, Denver, Detroit, Cleveland, Salt Lake City, Virginia, Minneapolis, New Orleans and Baltimore bringing diverse experiences and perspectives to the division. 8-9 hour shifts with built-in overlap with the next attending allowing for wrap-up, charting, and on-time finishing of your shifts. Required Qualifications: M.D. degree or foreign equivalent; board certification or board eligibility in pediatric emergency medicine; ability to obtain PALS instructor certification within 3 months and Minnesota medical license. Duties: We seek individuals who are outstanding physicians, subspecialty trained in Pediatric Emergency or dual boarded in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, and who are looking for a unique opportunity to participate in an emergency facility with a strong academically-oriented atmosphere, as faculty members of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Responsible for providing emergency medical services to critically ill and injured pediatric patients. Specific duties include: Diagnosing and treating all types of medical emergencies for infants, children, teens, and young adults. Conduct complete patient examinations; counsel patients and parents on treatment plans and care. Record patient medical history. Recommend diagnostic testing based on medical history and physical examination. Evaluation and management of children/adolescents with mental health conditions with or without addiction. Annual instruction of course on first year resident procedures for suturing, intubation, lumbar puncture and splinting. Instruction on Emergency education courses for general EM and pediatric residents. Instruction of at least three PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) courses annually to residents, nurses, physicians and advanced practitioners. Participate in mock codes with simulations for residents, nurses and clinical instructors at Hennepin Healthcare. Participation and project management to promote or improve the division (Quality Improvement leader, out-reach to urgent care and community hospitals). Participation in updates for Emergency Department guidelines. Perform related administrative duties within division, department, and hospital. Join related departmental/divisional committees.
